LaToya Ruby Frazier of Pittsburgh, PA attended Edinboro University of Pennsylvania where she received a B.F.A. degree in Photography and Graphic Design. Her work has also been exhibited at the Schweinfurth Memorial Art Center in Auburn and Light Work Community Darkrooms in Syracuse. Currently, she is pursuing her M.F.A. degree in Art Photography at Syracuse University, where she has been a recipient of the African American Fellowship. In addition to teaching photography at Syracuse University, Frazier has taught at Light Work Community Darkrooms and the Community Folk Art Center.

"The Notion of Family is a collaborative development between my grandmother, mother and I. It reveals the complexity of our relationships and the different roles we play," says Frazier. Frazier's 26 black and white photographs will be accompanied by her award-winning documentary film, A Mother To Hold, which intensely reveals the complex relationship she has with her drug-addicted mother. "My position and role as daughter and filmmaker transcends the stereotypical objective practice in classic documentary, which has continuously undermined the black family experience by avoiding our emotional realm," Frazier says. The film has been screened at the 2006 Black Maria Film Festival in Jersey City, NJ, the Brooklyn Underground Film Festival in New York City, the Black International Film Festival in New York City, and the Women of Color Film Festival in New York City, where she received the Producer's Choice Award.

James Keelaghan
Folkus Project

Price: $15
May Memorial Unitarian Society
3800 E. Genesee St., Syracuse

Folk music tells the stories of people and places, and Canada's James Keelaghan is certainly that kind of storyteller. After 19 years as one of Canada's best-known exports, eight albums, three Juno nominations, and one Juno (the Canadian Grammy), Keelaghan is established as a singer-songwriter with an international following -- and a compelling ability to tell the stories of himself and his land.

Keelaghan is renowned for mining the past for musical inspiration. His most celebrated songs tell the stories of extraordinary events from history through the eyes of ordinary people. Among them is the widely known and covered "Cold Missouri Waters," made into a standard when recorded a few years back by folk supergroup Cry Cry Cry. In this song, Keelaghan captures the true story of a backwoods firefighter who faces the choice of fleeing an out-of-control blaze or burning a circle of brush around himself, in hopes of discouraging the conflagration; it has quickly become one of the most popular songs in the contemporary folk canon.

A commanding performer, James Keelaghan develops an intimate rapport with audiences through his stories and humor -- and leaves them spellbound with passionate renditions of songs that touch on universal emotions and relate historical events to the present.

Growing up in Canada, Keelaghan always knew he¹d pursue either music or theatre as a career, but he studied history at the University of Calgary just in case. Eventually music "just took over." But it's Keelaghan's passion for history that has inspired some of his most celebrated songs; witness "Jenny Bryce," "Red River Rising," or the aforementioned "Cold Missouri Waters."

Syracuse Stage
Michael Donald Edwards, director

Archbold Theater, Syracuse Stage
820 E. Genesee St., Syracuse

An old man's foolishness and a daughter's momentary recalcitrance upend the order of the universe and induce an avalanche of human suffering. In this towering tragedy, Shakespeare dares us to examine the bounds of everything we think we cherish: the embrace of family, the value of forgiveness and the obligations of one generation to the next. How do we transfer power in a family or in a country? Does absolute certainty enable action or cripple the best of our humanity? Few poets can soar to such dramatic heights while exposing the complex web of human concerns Shakespeare illumines in King Lear. Few poets can make us listen so well to the cries of our own suffering.

A Little Night Music
Syracuse University Drama Department
Anthony Salatino, director

Storch Theater, Syracuse Stage
820 E. Genesee St., Syracuse

Civilized, sophisticated, enchanting, and witty: A Little Night Music is all of these. Yet with Ingmar Bergman's film The Smiles of Summer as its inspiration, desire and sensuality pervade. Stephen Sondheim's score is glorious, striking deeply emotional and resonant chords. The musical is set in turn-of-the-century Scandinavia and is a tale of romance and folly and focuses on middle-aged Fredrik Egerman and his virgin bride Anne. The couple has not consummated their marriage despite having been wed for nearly a year. When Frederik reunites with a former flame, an older actress named Desiree Armfeldt, he succumbs to her charms. The married Count Carl-Magnus Malcolm, one of Desiree's other lovers, discovers the pair. Malcolm relays the gossip to his wife Charlotte, who happens to be a childhood friend of Anne's, to whom eventually is revealed the truth about her husband's infidelity. The cast of characters eventually ends up at Desiree's country estate for a weekend party in which passion mounts, inevitably leading to startling revelations. Sondheim's music for A Little Night Music is unique in that it is a waltz musical, as Sondheim put all of the music in some form of triple time so that the whole score has the feeling of a long waltz. The score thus has an integrated sound, with each song contributing to the established mood of the show. The musical debuted at the Shubert Theatre in New York City in 1973, and went on to sweep the Tony Awards, including awards for Best Musical, Best Music and Lyrics, and Best Book.

Syracuse Opera

Price: $15 - $136
Crouse Hinds Concert Theater, Mulroy Civic Center

Figaro, now beyond his days as the Barber of Seville, is employed as a personal servant to the Count Almaviva. Figaro meets Susanna, falls in love and plans to marry. Enter the lusty Count Almaviva, who is also chasing Figaro's bride-to-be. A little espionage, a dash of lying and a hormonally obsessed young Cherubino set the tone for one of the funniest wedding parties ever. The Marriage of Figaro is highlighted by powerful arias and memorable moments that only Mozart can create.

This production reunites two stars of The Magic Flute: baritone Jimi James as Figaro (who was the birdman Papageno) and soprano Malinda Haslett (the beautiful Pamina) as Susanna.

Sung in English with projected words.

Suzanne Opton: Soldier
Light Work Gallery

Robert B. Menschel Media Center
316 Waverly Ave., Syracuse University, Syracuse

This exhibition takes an unusual and intimate look at soldiers who recently returned from a tour of duty in Iraq or Afghanistan. The series includes a mixture of black-and-white and color photographs that range in style from timeless studio portraits to intimate close-up views of the heads of the soldiers lying on a flat surface. The exhibition features large-format color photographs of the faces of soldiers, evoking a sense of dreaming but also hinting at the transformative experiences of war. Opton has taken the otherwise loaded idea of soldiers and warfare out of a political context and placed it into a silent dialogue from one human being to the next. She says of the images, "We all experience strategic moments when we feel most alive. These are the moments we will always remember, be they transcendent or horrific. Afterall, what are we if not our collection of memories? In making these portraits of soldiers, I simply wanted to look in the face of someone whod seen something unforgettable.

unseenamerica: photos and stories by workers

Price: Free
Panasci Lounge, Schine Student Center
Syracuse University, Syracuse

Photos by local workers who participated in unseenamerica NYS will be on display. "unseenamerica: photos and stories by workers" (ReganBooks; May 1, 2006) offers an intimate, honest and eye-opening look at the everyday lives of working-class men and women across the United States. Edited by Esther Cohen, the book grew from a unique photography program she created at Bread and Roses, the nonprofit cultural arm of Local ll99 of the Service Employees International Union. Over a two-year span, 350 groups -- from janitors in Washington, D.C., to formerly homeless women in Gainesville, Fla. -- were given point-and-shoot cameras and free lessons by professional photographers. Then they were asked to take pictures of what they saw -- favorite places, typical and special activities, neighbors and loved ones. The result is a striking collection of black-and-white images that each has a story to tell.

Unseenamerica NYS is a collaboration of the Bread & Roses Cultural Project of 1199SEIU, the New York State AFL-CIO and the Workforce Development Institute.

LaToya Ruby Frazier of Pittsburgh, PA attended Edinboro University of Pennsylvania where she received a B.F.A. degree in Photography and Graphic Design. She was the recipient of the Outstanding Achievement in Photography Award from Edinboro University. Her work has received the Patron's Purchase Award from the Erie Art Museum in Erie, PA.

The film has been screened at the 2006 Black Maria Film Festival in Jersey City, NJ, the Brooklyn Underground Film Festival in New York City, the Black International Film Festival in New York City, and the Women of Color Film Festival in New York City, where she received the Producer's Choice Award.

unseenamerica: photos and stories by workers

The musical debuted at the Shubert Theatre in New York City in 1973, and went on to sweep the Tony Awards, including awards for Best Musical, Best Music and Lyrics, and Best Book.

unseenamerica: photos and stories by workers

She was the recipient of the Outstanding Achievement in Photography Award from Edinboro University. Her work has received the Patron's Purchase Award from the Erie Art Museum in Erie, PA.

Folkus Project
The Kennedys, with special guest Ryan Fitzsimmons

Price: $10
May Memorial Unitarian Society
3800 E. Genesee St., Syracuse

Even after 10 years, over a thousand gigs and 500,000 miles of touring as a married, music-making couple, singer-guitarists Pete and Maura Kennedy haven't killed each other. The duo savors each instant in life and in each other's company, and it shows in their music. The Kennedys have been charming audiences, record buyers and critics for the past decade with their exuberant mixture of folk, rock, country, pop and their own brand of secular gospel, a philosophical depth in their lyrics, and joyful, kinetic performances and recordings.

Half a Million Miles, The Kennedys¹ eighth CD and Appleseed debut, presents ten sparkling roots-pop originals, plus two complementary covers, that are infused with Pete and Maura¹s ³live in the moment² outlook. They don¹t mind looking back, as on the title track that opens the album, recounting their storybook first date, in which each traveled 500 miles to meet at mutual hero Buddy Holly¹s grave in Lubbock, Texas. But they are most interested in looking around at what they see as an always-vibrant present tense.

The Kennedys' constant touring, coupled with the influence of writers Joseph Campbell, Aldous Huxley, and Eckhart Tolle, among others, has taught them about "the eternal now," just waiting to be noticed. With eyes wide open, they discover wisdom and musical inspiration everywhere. A mysterious greeting at their local East Village sushi bar is transformed into the buoyant "Namaste" (translation: "The divine in me recognizes the divine in you"). A neighborhood merchant becomes "9th Street Billy, the guru of East Side soul" in a lilting bossa nova. "Live" and "Listen" are respectively forceful and delicate reminders to stop and smell the roses. "Here and Now," inspired by Ralph Waldo Emerson's essay, "Self Reliance," reminds us literally that "We can¹t be happy until, like the rose, we too live with nature in the present, above time."

Proof that profundity needn't be ponderous shines through every song. Maura's lead vocals are sweet and often girlishly playful while displaying a plaintive edge of experience, and Pete's harmonies add a second coating of melodic delight. And the guitars! All those guitars! While Maura lives up to Pete's admiring description of her as "a serious student of rhythm guitar grooves," Pete lays down layers and swarms of chiming, dancing acoustic and 12-string leads, plus filigrees of electric sitar, banjo and mandolin (as well as accordion, organ, bass and drums).

Schubert's Schwanengeang
LeMoyne College
Music Journeys
Featuring Frederic Chiu, piano; Gerard Moses, narrator

Price: $12 regular, $7 seniors, free for students
Coyne Center for the Performing Arts
LeMoyne College, Syracuse

A theatrical setting of Schubert's Schwanengeang presented by virtouso pianist Frederic Chiu and Syracuse's own Gerard Moses. Originally a song cycle, this work - one of the last to leave Schubert's pen - will be performed in the solo piano version created by Franz Liszt. The music will be interwoven with dramatic readings of the poetry by Ludwig Rellstab and Heinrich Heine that make up the song cycle's lyrics.

Frederic Chiu's intriguing piano-playing and teaching springs from a diverse set of experiences and interests - his Asian/American/European background, his musical training, and an early and ongoing exploration of artificial intelligence and human psychology, especially the body-mind-heart connection. With over 20 CDs on the market, his repertoire includes the complete work of Prokofiev as well as popular classics of Chopin and Liszt, with a special place for the piano transcription. Many have been singled out, such as "Record of the Year" by Stereo Review, "Top 10 recordings" by the New Yorker, with raves from the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times.

Appleseed once again explores the uproariously funny genre of Interactive Theater with The Antics of Romantics. This is a Commedia Del Arte show in which the audience will experience a natural vested interest in the hero and heroine, who are cast directly from the audience at the beginning of the play. They are led through a plot in which love conquers all -- from lampooning of the familiar (disapproving in-laws and natural tragedies) to navigating of the absurd (surreally overdone competitors and ridiculous plot twists).

A unique focus of Only an Artist is the representation of almost thirty works from the last three years of Robineau's life.

Only an Artist: Adelaide Alsop Robineau, American Studio Potter is accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue containing three essays: by the exhibition's guest curator, Thomas Piché Jr.; noted Art Pottery scholar Ellen Paul Denker; and Syracuse University Professor Elizabeth Fowler.

Terra Firma: Two Perspectives
Redhouse
Featuring works by David MacDonald & Daphne Verley Pietrafesa

Former Redhouse Theater
219 S. West St., Syracuse

An exhibition of fine craft featuring renowned Syracuse ceramicist, David MacDonald and emerging ceramic artist Daphne Verley Pietrafesa. MacDonald's meticulous, elaborately carved vessels echo his African-American heritage in the use of organic, earth-toned clay and glazes and provide a wonderful juxtaposition alongside Pietrafesa's bold, bright, colorfully glazed works reminiscent of French, Italian and Spanish Majolica. The dialogue created between these two very different, yet complimentary perspectives, will give the viewer new insight and appreciation into the world of contemporary ceramic design, and the diverse history from which they both are drawn.

Syracuse ceramist David MacDonald transforms mounds of clay into works of art that have been displayed in museums and galleries all over the country. The beauty and richness of Africa's pottery resonates throughout his ceramic vessels. He discovered his passion for ceramics as an art student in college, and nearly 40 years later, he is still amazed at what he can create from a simple lump of clay. He gleans his ideas from ancient African designs: "I was inspired by it because they made pottery that had a lot of surface decorations, a lot of linear patterns and carvings on it."

Pietrafesas pottery is mainly hand formed, slab construction incorporating colorful slips and under glazes (some utilizing majolica glaze techniques) with patterns ranging from simple to ornate. Her meticulously glazed patterns are a vibrant edition to the rich history of majolica pottery decoration. Included in this exhibition are also pieces from a new series influenced by "Block Island Beach Rocks," where the emphasis is less on pattern and symmetry and more on organic forms, and surfaces.

The Gallery is also open prior to and after all scheduled events.

A 35mm screening of the 1934 romance classic starring Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert and directed by Frank Capra (105 mins).

Movie summary: Ellie Andrews has just tied the knot with society aviator King Westley when she is whisked away to her father's yacht and out of King's clutches. Ellie jumps ship and eventually winds up on a bus headed back to her husband. Reluctantly she must accept the help of out-of-work reporter Peter Warne. Actually, Warne doesn't give her any choice: either she sticks with him until he gets her back to her husband, or he'll blow the whistle on Ellie to her father. Either way, Peter gets what (he thinks!) he wants .... a really juicy newspaper story.

Appleseed Productions

Price: $15 regular; $12 students/seniors
Atonement Lutheran Church
116 W. Glen Ave., Syracuse
