Sarah McCoubrey Art Exhibit

Fayetteville artist Sarah McCoubrey, an Associate Professor of Art at Syracuse University, has created an archive of material surrounding the artistic life of the fictional character Hannah Morse, a 19th-century woman who is struggling to become a great landscape painter. In the process, Morse has invented several devices to aid her in her painting. McCoubrey draws upon her 20 years as a landscape painter to reveal what Morse learns in her journey as an artist. For this exhibit, McCoubrey will answer the question, "What if Hannah Morse met the real-life Matilda Joslyn Gage?" Gage was not only a leader in the early women’s rights movement, but later in life became an amateur painter.

Parking available nearby at the United Church of Fayetteville, 310 E. Genesee St. The Gage House is not handicapped accessible.

Interdisciplinary artist John Freyer returns to his native Syracuse for his first museum exhibition. The exhibit includes components of three different, but inter-related projects: his nationally renowned web-based performance piece, AllMyLifeForSale.Com; a new interactive installation entitled Walm-Art.Com; and Surplus, a sculpture/installation comprised of one-ton bales of surplus clothing. In addition, a twelve-foot rotating Bob's Big Boy sculpture, purchased by Freyer on eBay for the University of Iowa Museum of Art, will be on view in the Sculpture Court. Freyer was recently appointed as Visiting Professor at the University of Iowa, and a pilot of his Second Hand Stories continues to be broadcast by PBS, which is developing a series of the same name.

There have been several notable exhibitions in recent decades where gold, primarily ancient gold, has figured prominently. Yet, for all the exposure this material has received, contemporary American goldsmithing has been largely overlooked. The Art of Gold is an exhibition of jewelry and objects by studio goldsmiths that puts on display some of the finest work being made in the field today. It is the first major exhibition of its kind in 25 years.

Studio goldsmithingdesigning and fabricating objects by hand in a small studio settingis a fairly recent phenomenon. While contemporary goldsmithing has developed into a richly diverse artistic field, showing influences from Pop Art, Minimalism, Neo-Expressionism, and even Conceptual Art, it maintains its own sense of craft and unique historical lineage.

The exhibition is composed of 80 objects, including jewelry, hollowware, vessels, small sculptures and other nonjewelry items. While some pieces include stones and precious gems in their designs, they are not objects in which gold is merely a backdrop or frame for other elements. In all of the pieces, gold is the essential focus. The Art of Gold is a celebration of the inventiveness of contemporary goldsmiths and the beauty of traditional materials and processes.

Currently based in Miami, Argentine artist Pérez Celis' work is broad, interconnected and full of the forms first glimpsed in the vast landscape of his native Argentina. His avid sense of composition, comprised of intersecting planes and the use of rich materials and robust color, produces a thick physical world of layered and piercing planes. His giant-scale public works are featured worldwide and he exhibits extensively in Latin, South and North America. He recently illustrated Jorge Luis Borges' translation of Walt Whitman's epic poem Leaves of Grass ("Hojas de hierba"). In 2001, the former chair of SU's Board of Trustees, Joseph Lampe, established the Iris L. Pérez Celis Fund, in honor of the artist's late wife. This support provides scholarship opportunities for minority art students in VPA.

Richard English: Pastoral Perceptions -- An Exhibition of Watercolors: 1982-2005

The words that come to mind immediately when describing the work of Cazenovia-based watercolor artist, Richard English, are the same words that describe the man, Richard English; quiet, thoughtful, reflective. There is a wonderful symbiotic relationship between the man and his watercolors. His deep attachment to the rural landscape, especially Upstate New York and the low country sea coast of South Carolina, is elegantly captured in his masterfully executed works. There is an aura of ease and relaxation that is evident in the presence of both the artist and his landscapes. His paintings are realistic, employing both the wet-in-wet and dry brush techniques of traditional transparent watercolors. English has been painting since the early 1950's and although he's a mainly self-taught artist, his work as an engineer has influenced both his technique and his style.

Five New Short Plays

Script-in-hand readings of five original, short plays by two area writers, each followed by talkback discussions.

The first of three short plays by Richard D. Harris, The Long Wait,쳌 is about a middle-aged woman who finds that her 15-year wait for the return of an ex-lover finds him unworthy of the wait. In The Computer Game,쳌 the second play by Harris, an eager game player finds his obsession wrecks his romantic relationship. The last play, The Fall from Eden,쳌 is an account of the "true story" behind our earliest man/woman/God misunderstanding.

Richard D. Harris is a retired advertising executive, educated at Texas Wesleyan College and Cooper Union. He is a veteran community actor who is currently appearing in Member of the Wedding at The Redhouse. He is a member of the Armory Square Playhouse Playwrights Unit.

Amy Doherty's short play, Us,쳌 introduces us to an elderly couple who come to accept their relationship on an outing up a mountain, under a sky filled with stars, as they move on. The final play of the reading is The Big Gun,쳌 the story of a man and a woman, a conference, a hotel room, and crossed purposes leading to a surprise ending.

Amy Doherty has an undergraduate degree in theater arts and is a graduate of the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theater in New York City. On retiring from her position as Syracuse University Archivist, her interest in theater and playwriting was reactivated. Now a member of Armory Square Playwrights, she continues to write and to act in local community theater productions.

An exhibition that vividly portrays Syracuse's major role as a station along the Underground Railroad, titled "That laboratory of abolitionism, libel, and treason": Syracuse and the Underground Railroad, includes original artifacts from the Library's Special Collections Research Center and other institutions that document the flourishing of antislavery activism in Syracuse and surrounding communities from the 1830s through the 1850s.

The exhibition is presented in conjunction with this year's Syracuse Symposium lecture series and its theme of "borders." It is funded by the Kaleidoscope Project, a diversity initiative between the Divisions of Undergraduate Studies and Student Affairs to broaden the understanding of diversity and promote healthy dialogue about related issues at Syracuse University. The College of Arts and Sciences and the Warren and Edith Day Fund at Syracuse University Library have provided additional funding.

Kraczyna teaches printmaking and art-on-paper classes for the studio arts program at SU's Division of International Programs Abroad Florence Center. He is the founder and past director of Il Bisonte International School of Advanced Printmaking in Florence, where he taught techniques of color etching. Kraczyna co-authored I Segni Incisi, the first Italian textbook on the history and techniques of etching. He has directed "Studio for Color Etching" workshops in Barga, Lucca and at the International Symposium for Color Etching at Palacky University, Czech Republic. His work has been exhibited in more than 100 solo shows in the United States, Italy, Germany, England, Mexico, Columbia, Czech Republic and Japan, and is represented in the Uffizi Print Collection. Kraczyna holds an MFA from Southern Illinois University and a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design.

Beyond Borders: The Illusion of Normalcy in Film is a semester-long film series sponsored by the Beyond Compliance Coordinating Committee (BCCC) and the Center on Disability Studies, Law, and Human Policy of Syracuse University. One of House Beautiful's Top 100 American Designers, Filicia has emerged as a designer who blends mass media and interior design to create an indelible impression. From early on, he has focused his creativity on high-end interiors, working at the most venerable firms in New York City. Having established a strong classical foundation, Filicia is now exercising his personal aesthetic, driven by a unique and innovative vision of classic simplicity. Weekly, he stars as the interior design specialist on the Emmy Award-winning show "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy" and for his role has been honored with an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Art Direction for a Variety or Music Program. Prior to his acclaim on "Queer Eye," Filicia garnered recognition as a major presence in the design industry. In 1999, he established his NYC-based interior design company, Thom Filicia, Inc. (TFI). TFI specializes in residential and commercial products, with a range of high-profile clients in the fashion, entertainment, media, real estate and finance industries.

He has directed "Studio for Color Etching" workshops in Barga, Lucca and at the International Symposium for Color Etching at Palacky University, Czech Republic. The exhibit includes components of three different, but inter-related projects: his nationally renowned web-based performance piece, AllMyLifeForSale.Com; a new interactive installation entitled Walm-Art.Com; and Surplus, a sculpture/installation comprised of one-ton bales of surplus clothing. In addition, a twelve-foot rotating Bob's Big Boy sculpture, purchased by Freyer on eBay for the University of Iowa Museum of Art, will be on view in the Sculpture Court. Freyer was recently appointed as Visiting Professor at the University of Iowa, and a pilot of his Second Hand Stories continues to be broadcast by PBS, which is developing a series of the same name.

There have been several notable exhibitions in recent decades where gold, primarily ancient gold, has figured prominently. Yet, for all the exposure this material has received, contemporary American goldsmithing has been largely overlooked. The Art of Gold is an exhibition of jewelry and objects by studio goldsmiths that puts on display some of the finest work being made in the field today. It is the first major exhibition of its kind in 25 years.

Studio goldsmithingdesigning and fabricating objects by hand in a small studio settingis a fairly recent phenomenon. While contemporary goldsmithing has developed into a richly diverse artistic field, showing influences from Pop Art, Minimalism, Neo-Expressionism, and even Conceptual Art, it maintains its own sense of craft and unique historical lineage.

The exhibition is composed of 80 objects, including jewelry, hollowware, vessels, small sculptures and other nonjewelry items. While some pieces include stones and precious gems in their designs, they are not objects in which gold is merely a backdrop or frame for other elements. In all of the pieces, gold is the essential focus. The Art of Gold is a celebration of the inventiveness of contemporary goldsmiths and the beauty of traditional materials and processes.

Cinematographer Rick McKay arrived in New York in 1981 and was disappointed to realize that the Broadway of his boyhood dreams had been replaced by rock operas and musicals that celebrated felines over humans. With no crew on budget and one digital camera, McKay traveled for five years and over four continents to seek out the Broadway of his youth; The Golden Age of triple-threat stars that could sing, dance and act.

With such an overwhelming musical contribution, it's easy to overlook the carefully crafted stories at the heart of their plays. The story of the von Trapp family's dramatic escape from the Nazis reasserts the importance of saying no to malevolence and cruelty, especially when "legitimized" by popular approval. This is also a story of how a young and inexperienced woman opens a heart long closed to love and affection. It is a story of courage in the face of danger, and a story of finding hope and value in art. The music, we know, is sublime. It's time to become reacquainted with the power of this wonderful story.

An exhibition that vividly portrays Syracuse's major role as a station along the Underground Railroad, titled "That laboratory of abolitionism, libel, and treason": Syracuse and the Underground Railroad, includes original artifacts from the Library's Special Collections Research Center and other institutions that document the flourishing of antislavery activism in Syracuse and surrounding communities from the 1830s through the 1850s.

The exhibition is presented in conjunction with this year's Syracuse Symposium lecture series and its theme of "borders." It is funded by the Kaleidoscope Project, a diversity initiative between the Divisions of Undergraduate Studies and Student Affairs to broaden the understanding of diversity and promote healthy dialogue about related issues at Syracuse University. The College of Arts and Sciences and the Warren and Edith Day Fund at Syracuse University Library have provided additional funding.

The Italian American Reconciliation

The play is written by Academy Award-winner John Patrick Shanley, who serves up a comic romance Little Italy style. The story centers on Huey, who loves his ex-wife Janice, even though she shot his dog. But Teresa has designs on Huey, and Huey's friend Aldo wants him to steer clear of Janice. Who knows where she might aim next? Can Aldo reconcile the confusion and madness of this love-struck triangle? A heartfelt story of reclaiming love lost, the play features introspective characters that defy male-female stereotypes, ultimately expressing the confusion of modern romance when gender roles are ill defined. The play debuted at the Manhattan Theatre in 1986 and has had several regional productions. Shanley is perhaps best known for the Oscar-winning film Moonstruck from starring Cher and Nicholas Cage. Shanley was a 2005 recipient of the Pulitzer Prize for his new play, Doubt.

Currently based in Miami, Argentine artist Pérez Celis' work is broad, interconnected and full of the forms first glimpsed in the vast landscape of his native Argentina. His avid sense of composition, comprised of intersecting planes and the use of rich materials and robust color, produces a thick physical world of layered and piercing planes. His giant-scale public works are featured worldwide and he exhibits extensively in Latin, South and North America. He recently illustrated Jorge Luis Borges' translation of Walt Whitman's epic poem Leaves of Grass ("Hojas de hierba"). In 2001, the former chair of SU's Board of Trustees, Joseph Lampe, established the Iris L. Pérez Celis Fund, in honor of the artist's late wife. This support provides scholarship opportunities for minority art students in VPA.

The words that come to mind immediately when describing the work of Cazenovia-based watercolor artist, Richard English, are the same words that describe the man, Richard English; quiet, thoughtful, reflective. There is a wonderful symbiotic relationship between the man and his watercolors. His deep attachment to the rural landscape, especially Upstate New York and the low country sea coast of South Carolina, is elegantly captured in his masterfully executed works. There is an aura of ease and relaxation that is evident in the presence of both the artist and his landscapes. His paintings are realistic, employing both the wet-in-wet and dry brush techniques of traditional transparent watercolors. English has been painting since the early 1950's and although he's a mainly self-taught artist, his work as an engineer has influenced both his technique and his style.

The play is written by Academy Award-winner John Patrick Shanley, who serves up a comic romance Little Italy style. The story centers on Huey, who loves his ex-wife Janice, even though she shot his dog. But Teresa has designs on Huey, and Huey's friend Aldo wants him to steer clear of Janice. Who knows where she might aim next? Can Aldo reconcile the confusion and madness of this love-struck triangle? A heartfelt story of reclaiming love lost, the play features introspective characters that defy male-female stereotypes, ultimately expressing the confusion of modern romance when gender roles are ill defined. The play debuted at the Manhattan Theatre in 1986 and has had several regional productions. Shanley is perhaps best known for the Oscar-winning film Moonstruck from starring Cher and Nicholas Cage. Shanley was a 2005 recipient of the Pulitzer Prize for his new play, Doubt.

An exhibition that vividly portrays Syracuse's major role as a station along the Underground Railroad, titled "That laboratory of abolitionism, libel, and treason": Syracuse and the Underground Railroad, includes original artifacts from the Library's Special Collections Research Center and other institutions that document the flourishing of antislavery activism in Syracuse and surrounding communities from the 1830s through the 1850s.

The exhibition is presented in conjunction with this year's Syracuse Symposium lecture series and its theme of "borders." It is funded by the Kaleidoscope Project, a diversity initiative between the Divisions of Undergraduate Studies and Student Affairs to broaden the understanding of diversity and promote healthy dialogue about related issues at Syracuse University. The College of Arts and Sciences and the Warren and Edith Day Fund at Syracuse University Library have provided additional funding.

Kraczyna teaches printmaking and art-on-paper classes for the studio arts program at SU's Division of International Programs Abroad Florence Center. He is the founder and past director of Il Bisonte International School of Advanced Printmaking in Florence, where he taught techniques of color etching. Kraczyna co-authored I Segni Incisi, the first Italian textbook on the history and techniques of etching. He has directed "Studio for Color Etching" workshops in Barga, Lucca and at the International Symposium for Color Etching at Palacky University, Czech Republic. His work has been exhibited in more than 100 solo shows in the United States, Italy, Germany, England, Mexico, Columbia, Czech Republic and Japan, and is represented in the Uffizi Print Collection. Kraczyna holds an MFA from Southern Illinois University and a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design.

Interdisciplinary artist John Freyer returns to his native Syracuse for his first museum exhibition. The exhibit includes components of three different, but inter-related projects: his nationally renowned web-based performance piece, AllMyLifeForSale.Com; a new interactive installation entitled Walm-Art.Com; and Surplus, a sculpture/installation comprised of one-ton bales of surplus clothing. In addition, a twelve-foot rotating Bob's Big Boy sculpture, purchased by Freyer on eBay for the University of Iowa Museum of Art, will be on view in the Sculpture Court. Freyer was recently appointed as Visiting Professor at the University of Iowa, and a pilot of his Second Hand Stories continues to be broadcast by PBS, which is developing a series of the same name.

There have been several notable exhibitions in recent decades where gold, primarily ancient gold, has figured prominently. Yet, for all the exposure this material has received, contemporary American goldsmithing has been largely overlooked. The Art of Gold is an exhibition of jewelry and objects by studio goldsmiths that puts on display some of the finest work being made in the field today. It is the first major exhibition of its kind in 25 years.

Studio goldsmithingdesigning and fabricating objects by hand in a small studio settingis a fairly recent phenomenon. While contemporary goldsmithing has developed into a richly diverse artistic field, showing influences from Pop Art, Minimalism, Neo-Expressionism, and even Conceptual Art, it maintains its own sense of craft and unique historical lineage.

The exhibition is composed of 80 objects, including jewelry, hollowware, vessels, small sculptures and other nonjewelry items. While some pieces include stones and precious gems in their designs, they are not objects in which gold is merely a backdrop or frame for other elements. In all of the pieces, gold is the essential focus. The Art of Gold is a celebration of the inventiveness of contemporary goldsmiths and the beauty of traditional materials and processes.

Currently based in Miami, Argentine artist Pérez Celis' work is broad, interconnected and full of the forms first glimpsed in the vast landscape of his native Argentina. His avid sense of composition, comprised of intersecting planes and the use of rich materials and robust color, produces a thick physical world of layered and piercing planes. His giant-scale public works are featured worldwide and he exhibits extensively in Latin, South and North America. He recently illustrated Jorge Luis Borges' translation of Walt Whitman's epic poem Leaves of Grass ("Hojas de hierba"). In 2001, the former chair of SU's Board of Trustees, Joseph Lampe, established the Iris L. Pérez Celis Fund, in honor of the artist's late wife. This support provides scholarship opportunities for minority art students in VPA.

The story of the von Trapp family's dramatic escape from the Nazis reasserts the importance of saying no to malevolence and cruelty, especially when "legitimized" by popular approval. This is also a story of how a young and inexperienced woman opens a heart long closed to love and affection. It is a story of courage in the face of danger, and a story of finding hope and value in art. The music, we know, is sublime. It's time to become reacquainted with the power of this wonderful story.

Worse still, the victim is the man who broke up Henry's first marriage. Moreover Henry will be arriving shortly with a V.I.P. who might take a dim view of bodies in the drawing room. Clarissa's fast talking places her and Pippa in some hair-raising experiences. By the time Henry arrives, the murderer has been unmasked and all is normal so normal that Henry is unable to believe Clarissa when she explains why there are no refreshments for their honored guest.

Sarah McCoubrey Art Exhibit

Fayetteville artist Sarah McCoubrey, an Associate Professor of Art at Syracuse University, has created an archive of material surrounding the artistic life of the fictional character Hannah Morse, a 19th-century woman who is struggling to become a great landscape painter. In the process, Morse has invented several devices to aid her in her painting. McCoubrey draws upon her 20 years as a landscape painter to reveal what Morse learns in her journey as an artist. For this exhibit, McCoubrey will answer the question, "What if Hannah Morse met the real-life Matilda Joslyn Gage?" Gage was not only a leader in the early women’s rights movement, but later in life became an amateur painter.

While contemporary goldsmithing has developed into a richly diverse artistic field, showing influences from Pop Art, Minimalism, Neo-Expressionism, and even Conceptual Art, it maintains its own sense of craft and unique historical lineage.

The exhibition is composed of 80 objects, including jewelry, hollowware, vessels, small sculptures and other nonjewelry items. While some pieces include stones and precious gems in their designs, they are not objects in which gold is merely a backdrop or frame for other elements. In all of the pieces, gold is the essential focus. The Art of Gold is a celebration of the inventiveness of contemporary goldsmiths and the beauty of traditional materials and processes.

Currently based in Miami, Argentine artist Pérez Celis' work is broad, interconnected and full of the forms first glimpsed in the vast landscape of his native Argentina. His avid sense of composition, comprised of intersecting planes and the use of rich materials and robust color, produces a thick physical world of layered and piercing planes. His giant-scale public works are featured worldwide and he exhibits extensively in Latin, South and North America. He recently illustrated Jorge Luis Borges' translation of Walt Whitman's epic poem Leaves of Grass ("Hojas de hierba"). In 2001, the former chair of SU's Board of Trustees, Joseph Lampe, established the Iris L. Pérez Celis Fund, in honor of the artist's late wife. This support provides scholarship opportunities for minority art students in VPA.

The words that come to mind immediately when describing the work of Cazenovia-based watercolor artist, Richard English, are the same words that describe the man, Richard English; quiet, thoughtful, reflective. There is a wonderful symbiotic relationship between the man and his watercolors. His deep attachment to the rural landscape, especially Upstate New York and the low country sea coast of South Carolina, is elegantly captured in his masterfully executed works. There is an aura of ease and relaxation that is evident in the presence of both the artist and his landscapes. His paintings are realistic, employing both the wet-in-wet and dry brush techniques of traditional transparent watercolors. English has been painting since the early 1950's and although he's a mainly self-taught artist, his work as an engineer has influenced both his technique and his style.

Clarissa, the second wife of Henry Hailsham Brown, is adept at spinning tales of adventure for their bored diplomatic circle in this Agatha Christie tale. When a murder takes place in her drawing room she finds live drama much harder to cope with, especially as she suspects the murderer might be her young stepdaughter Pippa. Worse still, the victim is the man who broke up Henry's first marriage. Moreover Henry will be arriving shortly with a V.I.P. who might take a dim view of bodies in the drawing room. Clarissa's fast talking places her and Pippa in some hair-raising experiences. By the time Henry arrives, the murderer has been unmasked and all is normal so normal that Henry is unable to believe Clarissa when she explains why there are no refreshments for their honored guest.

The Italian American Reconciliation

The play is written by Academy Award-winner John Patrick Shanley, who serves up a comic romance Little Italy style. The story centers on Huey, who loves his ex-wife Janice, even though she shot his dog. But Teresa has designs on Huey, and Huey's friend Aldo wants him to steer clear of Janice. Who knows where she might aim next? Can Aldo reconcile the confusion and madness of this love-struck triangle? A heartfelt story of reclaiming love lost, the play features introspective characters that defy male-female stereotypes, ultimately expressing the confusion of modern romance when gender roles are ill defined. The play debuted at the Manhattan Theatre in 1986 and has had several regional productions. Shanley is perhaps best known for the Oscar-winning film Moonstruck from starring Cher and Nicholas Cage. Shanley was a 2005 recipient of the Pulitzer Prize for his new play, Doubt.
