Interdisciplinary artist John Freyer returns to his native Syracuse for his first museum exhibition. The exhibit includes components of three different, but inter-related projects: his nationally renowned web-based performance piece, AllMyLifeForSale.Com; a new interactive installation entitled Walm-Art.Com; and Surplus, a sculpture/installation comprised of one-ton bales of surplus clothing. In addition, a twelve-foot rotating Bob's Big Boy sculpture, purchased by Freyer on eBay for the University of Iowa Museum of Art, will be on view in the Sculpture Court. Freyer was recently appointed as Visiting Professor at the University of Iowa, and a pilot of his Second Hand Stories continues to be broadcast by PBS, which is developing a series of the same name.

An exhibition that vividly portrays Syracuse's major role as a station along the Underground Railroad, titled "That laboratory of abolitionism, libel, and treason": Syracuse and the Underground Railroad, includes original artifacts from the Library's Special Collections Research Center and other institutions that document the flourishing of antislavery activism in Syracuse and surrounding communities from the 1830s through the 1850s.

The exhibition is presented in conjunction with this year's Syracuse Symposium lecture series and its theme of "borders." It is funded by the Kaleidoscope Project, a diversity initiative between the Divisions of Undergraduate Studies and Student Affairs to broaden the understanding of diversity and promote healthy dialogue about related issues at Syracuse University. The College of Arts and Sciences and the Warren and Edith Day Fund at Syracuse University Library have provided additional funding.

Kraczyna teaches printmaking and art-on-paper classes for the studio arts program at SU's Division of International Programs Abroad Florence Center. He is the founder and past director of Il Bisonte International School of Advanced Printmaking in Florence, where he taught techniques of color etching. Kraczyna co-authored I Segni Incisi, the first Italian textbook on the history and techniques of etching. He has directed "Studio for Color Etching" workshops in Barga, Lucca and at the International Symposium for Color Etching at Palacky University, Czech Republic. His work has been exhibited in more than 100 solo shows in the United States, Italy, Germany, England, Mexico, Columbia, Czech Republic and Japan, and is represented in the Uffizi Print Collection. Kraczyna holds an MFA from Southern Illinois University and a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design.

University Lectures

William H. Foege is an epidemiologist who worked in the successful campaign to eradicate smallpox in the 1970s. Dr. Foege became Chief of the CDC Smallpox Eradication Program, and was appointed director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control in 1977. In 1984, Foege and several colleagues formed the Task Force for Child Survival, a working group for the World Health Organization, UNICEF, The World Bank, the United Nations Development Program, and the Rockefeller Foundation. Its success in accelerating childhood immunization led to an expansion of its mandate in 1991 to include other issues that diminish the quality of life for children. Dr. Foege has championed many issues, but child survival and development, injury prevention, population, preventive medicine, and public health leadership are of special interest, particularly in the developing world. He is a strong proponent of disease eradication and control, and has taken an active role in the eradication of Guinea worm, polio and measles, and the elimination of River Blindness. By writing and lecturing extensively, Dr. Foege has succeeded in broadening public awareness of these issues and bringing them to the forefront of domestic and international health policies.

Pianist Susan Crocker earned a Bachelor of Music with Distinction in Performance at the Eastman School of Music where she studied with Eugene List and Frank Glazer. She earned a Master of Music in Performance at Syracuse University where she was awarded a University Fellowship and studied with George Pappastavrou.

As accompanist for Ithaca Talent Education's Violin Tour Group, she performed on tour in Japan, the Czech Republic, Italy and Denmark. Ms. Crocker is well-known in the Central New York region as a soloist and collaborative pianist. She is rehearsal pianist for Syracuse Oratorio Society. She teaches at Onondaga Community College and maintains a private studio in Syracuse.

And, then there's this sudden infestation of unusually aggressive aphids. Mysterious. Playwright Tracy Letts takes a bite out of contemporary anxieties with a stinging thriller that really gets under the skin. An Off-Broadway hit, Bug was the talk of New York last season. An exhibition that vividly portrays Syracuse's major role as a station along the Underground Railroad, titled "That laboratory of abolitionism, libel, and treason": Syracuse and the Underground Railroad, includes original artifacts from the Library's Special Collections Research Center and other institutions that document the flourishing of antislavery activism in Syracuse and surrounding communities from the 1830s through the 1850s.

The exhibition is presented in conjunction with this year's Syracuse Symposium lecture series and its theme of "borders." It is funded by the Kaleidoscope Project, a diversity initiative between the Divisions of Undergraduate Studies and Student Affairs to broaden the understanding of diversity and promote healthy dialogue about related issues at Syracuse University. The College of Arts and Sciences and the Warren and Edith Day Fund at Syracuse University Library have provided additional funding.

Kraczyna teaches printmaking and art-on-paper classes for the studio arts program at SU's Division of International Programs Abroad Florence Center. He is the founder and past director of Il Bisonte International School of Advanced Printmaking in Florence, where he taught techniques of color etching. Kraczyna co-authored I Segni Incisi, the first Italian textbook on the history and techniques of etching. He has directed "Studio for Color Etching" workshops in Barga, Lucca and at the International Symposium for Color Etching at Palacky University, Czech Republic. His work has been exhibited in more than 100 solo shows in the United States, Italy, Germany, England, Mexico, Columbia, Czech Republic and Japan, and is represented in the Uffizi Print Collection. Kraczyna holds an MFA from Southern Illinois University and a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design.

Interdisciplinary artist John Freyer returns to his native Syracuse for his first museum exhibition. The exhibit includes components of three different, but inter-related projects: his nationally renowned web-based performance piece, AllMyLifeForSale.Com; a new interactive installation entitled Walm-Art.Com; and Surplus, a sculpture/installation comprised of one-ton bales of surplus clothing. In addition, a twelve-foot rotating Bob's Big Boy sculpture, purchased by Freyer on eBay for the University of Iowa Museum of Art, will be on view in the Sculpture Court. Freyer was recently appointed as Visiting Professor at the University of Iowa, and a pilot of his Second Hand Stories continues to be broadcast by PBS, which is developing a series of the same name.

Martha Buskirk will discuss Bob's Big Boy and the particular spin John D. Freyer gives to the readymade nearly a century after Marcel Duchamp's initial gesture. She will explore how the creation of a work through the artist's act of designation is part of a broader series of transformations in the making and display of art, with particular focus on Freyer's Aftermarket exhibit. Buskirk is Associate Professor of art history and criticism at Montserrat College of Art in Beverly, MA, and during the fall 2005, Visiting Associate Professor in the History, Theory and Criticism Program at MIT. She is author of The Contingent Object of Contemporary Art (MIT Press, 2003).

Artist, storyteller, and businessman, Devarajan is founder and CEO of Gotham Entertainment Group, the Indian licensee of Marvel Comics and leading publisher of comic books in southern Asia. In 2004 Gotham released Spider-Man India. Devarajan, one of the creators of Spider-Man India, describes this new narrative form as a "transcreation," where Western characters have been recreated to reflect the local customs, culture, and mythology of India. Devarajan started Gotham while a fine arts student in The College of Visual and Performing Arts at SU.

This appearance is part of Syracuse Symposium, a semester-long intellectual and artistic festival celebrating interdisciplinary thinking, imagining, and creating. The theme this fall is "borders."

Pinkney will read from selected books and take questions on writing, childrens literature and publishing. The public reading is being co-sponsored by The Reading and Language Arts Center, The Study Council at SU and the Student Organization of Literacy Educators and Researchers (SOLER) in the School of Education.

Pinkney has served as the editorial director of Hyperion Books for Children in New York City and the vice president and publisher of the Childrens Division of Houghton Mifflin Publishing. She is also the founding editor of Jump at the Sun, an imprint of books celebrating African-American life and culture. She is author of more than a dozen childrens books, including Let It Shine: Stories of Black Women Freedom Fighters (Harcourt, 2000), which won the 2001 Coretta Scott King Author Award. Pinkney and her husband, childrens book illustrator and writer Brian Pinkney, have collaborated on several books, including Ella Fitzgerald: The Tale of a Vocal Virtuoso (Hyperion, 2002), Caldecott Honor book Duke Ellington: The Piano Prince and His Orchestra (Hyperion, 1998), Alvin Ailey (Hyperion, 1995) and other illustrated childrens books based on the biographies of accomplished African Americans.

Interdisciplinary artist John Freyer returns to his native Syracuse for his first museum exhibition. The exhibit includes components of three different, but inter-related projects: his nationally renowned web-based performance piece, AllMyLifeForSale.Com; a new interactive installation entitled Walm-Art.Com; and Surplus, a sculpture/installation comprised of one-ton bales of surplus clothing. In addition, a twelve-foot rotating Bob's Big Boy sculpture, purchased by Freyer on eBay for the University of Iowa Museum of Art, will be on view in the Sculpture Court. Freyer was recently appointed as Visiting Professor at the University of Iowa, and a pilot of his Second Hand Stories continues to be broadcast by PBS, which is developing a series of the same name.

Vivian Geiger works mostly in color, using special papers or enhanced her photos with original artwork.

John Keller has considered himself a photographer since childhood when he first used a Brownie camera. He shoots in color and black&white, addressing varied subject matter, including still life and portraits.

Richard Lewis works in color, primarily nature and landscape photography. A favorite location is the Tibbets Point Lighthouse in Cape Vincent.

A contemporary and musical forerunner of Josquin, Obrecht lived in the Low Countries and in Italy, writing masses, motets, songs(in his native Dutch) and instrumental music. It has been said that the "boundless exuberance" of his music ranks it with the greatest of his time. Featured in the program will be his groundbreaking mass based on the popular Italian song Fortuna Desperata. Viol prelude beginning at 3:30.

Four Short Plays
Armory Square Playwrights

Armory Square Playhouse will present script-in-hand readings of four original, short plays by three area writers as part of its continuing series of presentations of new plays by local playwrights.

The first of the four plays, Pay It Forward, by Vicki L Wilson is a brief, experimental e-mail exchange that includes a touch of devastating retribution in its last message. The Human Condition, the second play by Wilson, introduces eight people in a diner who contemplate much more than the breakfast menu. Wilson is Interim Assistant Director of University Publications at Colgate University. She is a produced playwright and published poet and short fiction writer.

David Feldman's 10-minute long Uncle Edgar's Will is a comedy with a surprise ending about a young man, in love and in debt, who finds himself unexpectedly cut out of his wealthy uncle's will. Feldman is Artistic Director of Armory Square Playhouse. His plays have been produced most recently at Ithaca's Kitchen Theatre and also in Boston, New York City, Los Angeles and Syracuse.

The final play for the reading will be First Love by Donna Stuccio. In this drama, two former high school sweethearts meet after 30 years. Their innocent first attachment had been severed as a result of a natural disaster, and now decades of loss force them to confront the emotional toll of that earlier parting. Stuccio is a long standing member of the Armory Square Playwrights Unit. Her Blue Moon and The Job premiered at Salt City Playhouse. Blue Moon was selected for publication in the Journal of Women and Criminal Justice. Also an actress, Stuccio recently appeared in the Redhouse production of Life X Three.

A talkback discussion with the authors will follow each reading.
