A City Rises from the Banks of the Canal

Vast stretches of wilderness areas sparsely populated and dotted with small settlements would aptly describe New Yorks interior in early 1800s. Then, in 1825, a man-made waterway stretching 363 miles from Albany to Buffalo was completed. Once ridiculed as "Clinton's Folly," the Erie Canal quickly became known as the "Mother of Cities" as it gave rise to hundreds of canal-side communities and reshaped Upstate New York's geography and economy forever. The history of the City of Syracuse, located on the banks of the Erie and Oswego Canals, is told through its unique canal-era architectural structures. The buildings represented in the exhibition were selected for their proximity to the Erie Canal, as well as, if the buildings use was canal related. Historic images, original paintings and prints feature a host of canal-era banks, warehouses, private residences and businesses, as well as canal structures such as locks and aqueducts. This summer the Everson Museum will be exhibiting Complex Form No. 7, a large-scale sculpture by internationally known conceptual artist Sol Lewitt. Like most minimalist and conceptual artists, Lewitt emphasized idea over execution. Complex Form No. 7 consists of eight module structures, spanning almost seventeen feet, that have been constructed and assembled by assistants according to Lewitt's design specifications. The artistic process is intellectual rather than emotional, as demonstrated by the artist's decision to use everyday materials and no color to carry out a complicated design drawing.

Lewitt donated Complex Form No. 7 to the Everson Museum in 1993. A 1949 graduate of Syracuse University, he returned to campus in 2004 to construct Six Curved Walls (Syracuse) in honor of the inauguration of Chancellor Nancy Cantor. The installation, located on the hillside of Crouse College, consists of a series of six undulating walls made of cinderblocks, each twelve feet high and stretching 140 feet. A third sculpture by Sol Lewitt stands outside the James M. Hanley Federal Building in downtown Syracuse.

Wood ends up directing and starring in their strange musical adaptation of The Seagull. As they all get to know one another, sparks fly onstage as well as behind the scenes. Perfect summer fare...

Act One opens with a touring company dress rehearsing "Nothing On", a conventional farce with a hilarious melee of stock characters and situations, the night before it opens.Act Two is a backstage explanation of how things got that way, as the audience now literally watches the backstage escapades of the same actors now in performance of "Nothing On", as they try their hardest to both keep the play going and kill each other. Act Three is a magnificent coda of how things just got worse as the show continues on its tour.

When stripped naked, what are you really worth? Award-winning actress Bari Hochwald answers this question when she presents the U.S. debut of her first play, Net Worth. In this witty and poignant one-woman show, Hochwald (Star Trek, Desperate Housewives, Shadow of the Blair Witch) juggles a diverse career as a popular television, film and theater actress and personal finance coach. The fast-paced, 80-minute play strips her naked to the essence of herself as she conjures up the deep and often hilarious struggles that clash between a family with a challenging legacy and a career that has created financial challenges. Deeper still, the layers are peeled away as she questions the past, present and future of her life, her loves, her passions and her check book.

Hochwald's inspiration for Net Worth came from her experiences teaching artists and students about personal finance and writing the forthcoming book Your Money, Your Art, Your Life! She developed the play in workshops in Los Angeles, in preparation for its Syracuse premiere. In August, the production will move to Scotland's Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

A longtime Los Angeles resident, Hochwald recently returned to Syracuse to work as associate to the dean in Syracuse University's College of Visual and Performing Arts. An alumna of SU's Department of Drama, she last performed locally in the Syracuse Stage production of Androcles and the Lion.

Like most minimalist and conceptual artists, Lewitt emphasized idea over execution. Complex Form No. 7 consists of eight module structures, spanning almost seventeen feet, that have been constructed and assembled by assistants according to Lewitt's design specifications. The artistic process is intellectual rather than emotional, as demonstrated by the artist's decision to use everyday materials and no color to carry out a complicated design drawing.

A 1949 graduate of Syracuse University, he returned to campus in 2004 to construct Six Curved Walls (Syracuse) in honor of the inauguration of Chancellor Nancy Cantor. The installation, located on the hillside of Crouse College, consists of a series of six undulating walls made of cinderblocks, each twelve feet high and stretching 140 feet. A City Rises from the Banks of the Canal

Vast stretches of wilderness areas sparsely populated and dotted with small settlements would aptly describe New Yorks interior in early 1800s. Then, in 1825, a man-made waterway stretching 363 miles from Albany to Buffalo was completed. Once ridiculed as "Clinton's Folly," the Erie Canal quickly became known as the "Mother of Cities" as it gave rise to hundreds of canal-side communities and reshaped Upstate New York's geography and economy forever. The history of the City of Syracuse, located on the banks of the Erie and Oswego Canals, is told through its unique canal-era architectural structures. The buildings represented in the exhibition were selected for their proximity to the Erie Canal, as well as, if the buildings use was canal related. Historic images, original paintings and prints feature a host of canal-era banks, warehouses, private residences and businesses, as well as canal structures such as locks and aqueducts. Sol Lewitt: Complex Forms No. 7

This summer the Everson Museum will be exhibiting Complex Form No. 7, a large-scale sculpture by internationally known conceptual artist Sol Lewitt. Like most minimalist and conceptual artists, Lewitt emphasized idea over execution. Complex Form No. 7 consists of eight module structures, spanning almost seventeen feet, that have been constructed and assembled by assistants according to Lewitt's design specifications. The artistic process is intellectual rather than emotional, as demonstrated by the artist's decision to use everyday materials and no color to carry out a complicated design drawing.

Lewitt donated Complex Form No. 7 to the Everson Museum in 1993. A 1949 graduate of Syracuse University, he returned to campus in 2004 to construct Six Curved Walls (Syracuse) in honor of the inauguration of Chancellor Nancy Cantor. The installation, located on the hillside of Crouse College, consists of a series of six undulating walls made of cinderblocks, each twelve feet high and stretching 140 feet. A third sculpture by Sol Lewitt stands outside the James M. Hanley Federal Building in downtown Syracuse.

The circus was an important theme in Rouault's work, and when Parisian publisher Ambrose Vollard suggested a portfolio of prints on the subject, Rouault spent 12 years creating designs for Cirque de L'Etoile Filante (Circus of the Shooting Star), color aquatints, and wood engravings.
