Wilmer Valderrama

Actor, producer and activist Wilmer Valderrama has been making audiences laugh, listen, and think for nearly two decades. Perhaps most recognized for his role as exchange student Fez on the Emmy-nominated series That 70s Show, the role catapulted him to stardom and garnered numerous Teen Choice Awards.

Valderrama currently stars in the #1 TV drama NCIS and will voice the first Latino Prince Charming in the upcoming animated feature film Charming. Other recent television credits include appearances in Netflix's The Ranch, ABC's Grey's Anatomy and Robert Rodriguez & Quentin Tarantino's television series From Dusk Till Dawn. Valderrama also voiced the main character of Disney's hugely popular animated children's show Handy Manny, which introduced preschoolers to Spanish.

Behind the camera, Valderrama created and produced the MTV series YO MOMMA, also serving as its host. And, his production company WV Entertainment has multiple television and film projects in development.

In his community, Valderrama serves on the board of Voto Latino and as the spokesperson for the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute's Ready 2 Lead program, which works to educate and empower Latino youth. Valderrama also recently co-founded HARNESS, a group dedicated to connecting communities to inspire action and power change. In 2013, Valderrama was honored with an ALMA Award for Outstanding Social Activism.

Valderrama will take part in a conversation with David Barbier Jr., an international relations major in the Maxwell School and a television, radio and film major in the Newhouse School. He is also a Posse Foundation Scholar and a participant in the Renée Crown University Honors Program.

Deb Olin Unferth is the author of six books of fiction and nonfiction, including, most recently, the novel Barn 8 (Graywolf, March 2020). Her writing has appeared in Harper's, The Paris Review, Granta, Vice, Tin House, NOON, the New York Times, and McSweeney's. The recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship and three Pushcart Prizes, she grew up in Chicago and received an MFA from Syracuse University. She is now an associate professor of creative writing at the University of Texas at Austin, where she teaches for the Michener Center for Writers and the New Writers Project.

An advocate of prison reform, Unferth founded and runs the Pen City Writers, a creative-writing certificate program at a maximum security prison in southern Texas. For this work she won the 2017 Texas Governor's Criminal Justice Service Award and the 2017 American Short Fiction Community Star Award.

Tim Atseff has been painting since 1970. He spent his professional career in journalism including several years as an editorial cartoonist exposing hypocrisy and corruption with the stroke of his pen. Enlarge a nose or jowl here and droop an ear-lobe or place tiny hands there. The idea is to take an imperfection and apply a magnifying glass while still capturing the subject's likeness and exposing them for who they really are. This exhibition merges Atseff's painting and cartooning into one hybrid presentation.

The works included in this exhibition eloquently speak to the myriad thoughts, ideas, and feelings that all humans share, regardless of individual ability or circumstance. The ancient Andean civilizations of South America were strikingly diverse in their religious beliefs and material cultures, but each developed complex ceramics for both domestic and ritual use. This exhibition features key pieces from the Museum's collection, including several recent acquisitions from the Nazca, Paracas, Moche, Chimú, and Chavin cultures.

Since acquiring its first works by Adelaide Alsop Robineau in 1916, the Everson Museum of Art has built one of the finest collections of art pottery in the world. "Renegades and Reformers" revolves around two common personality types among potters: the "renegades" who embarked on highly personal artistic quests that pushed clay and glaze to their limits, and the "reformers," whose modern designs and social attitudes pushed back against Victorian mores.

This exhibition examines over one hundred years of the Museum's collecting priorities, from the Museum's earliest acquisitions in 1911 to work acquired in 2019

Visiting Artist Lecture Series: Julio Salgado

Julio Salgado is the co-founder of DreamersAdrift.com and Migrant Storytelling Manager for The Center for Cultural Power. His status as an undocumented, queer artivist has fueled the contents of his visual art, which depict key individuals and moments of the DREAM Act and the migrant rights movement. Undocumented students and allies across the country have used Salgado's artwork to call attention to the youth-led movement. Salgado is the co-creator of The Disruptors Fellowship, an inaugural fellowship for emerging television writers of color who identify as trans/and or non-binary, disabled, undocumented and/or formerly undocumented immigrants.

The lecture is available to the public via livestream on the Syracuse University Art Museum YouTube channel.

Poet Keith Flynn

Keith Flynn is the award-winning author of seven books, including six collections of poetry, most recently The Skin of Meaning (Red Hen Press, 2020), and a collection of essays, entitled The Rhythm Method, Razzmatazz and Memory: How To Make Your Poetry Swing (2007). From 1984-1999, he was lyricist and lead singer for the nationally acclaimed rock band, The Crystal Zoo, which produced three albums. He is currently touring with a supporting combo, The Holy Men. His poetry and essays have appeared in many journals and anthologies, including The American Literary Review, The Colorado Review, Poetry Wales, and many others. He has been awarded the Sandburg Prize, a 2013 NC Literary Fellowship, the ASCAP Emerging Songwriter Prize, and the Paumanok Poetry Award; he was twice named the Gilbert-Chappell Distinguished Poet for NC. Flynn is also founder and managing editor of The Asheville Poetry Review.

Tim Atseff has been painting since 1970. He spent his professional career in journalism including several years as an editorial cartoonist exposing hypocrisy and corruption with the stroke of his pen. Enlarge a nose or jowl here and droop an ear-lobe or place tiny hands there. The idea is to take an imperfection and apply a magnifying glass while still capturing the subject's likeness and exposing them for who they really are. This exhibition merges Atseff's painting and cartooning into one hybrid presentation.

A Legacy of Firsts: The Everson Collects

In 1911, the Syracuse Museum of Fine Arts (known today as the Everson) made history as the first museum in the country to declare that it would focus on collecting works made by American artists. This decision, implemented by Museum Director Fernando Carter, was the first of many made by directors that ultimately defined the Everson's collection as it exists today. This exhibition examines over one hundred years of the Museum's collecting priorities, from the Museum's earliest acquisitions in 1911 to work acquired in 2019

Since acquiring its first works by Adelaide Alsop Robineau in 1916, the Everson Museum of Art has built one of the finest collections of art pottery in the world. "Renegades and Reformers" revolves around two common personality types among potters: the "renegades" who embarked on highly personal artistic quests that pushed clay and glaze to their limits, and the "reformers," whose modern designs and social attitudes pushed back against Victorian mores.

From Domestic to Divine: Andean Ceramics from the Permanent Collection

The ancient Andean civilizations of South America were strikingly diverse in their religious beliefs and material cultures, but each developed complex ceramics for both domestic and ritual use. This exhibition features key pieces from the Museum's collection, including several recent acquisitions from the Nazca, Paracas, Moche, Chimú, and Chavin cultures.

Coordinated by Arise, a non-profit agency based in Syracuse, Unique celebrates the artistic talents of Central New Yorkers living with disabilities. The works included in this exhibition eloquently speak to the myriad thoughts, ideas, and feelings that all humans share, regardless of individual ability or circumstance. The annual competition invites submissions of art and literature which are then selected for display by a panel of judges, and the works are exhibited in several venues throughout CNY.
