"Deadlocked and Loaded: Disarming America" is a "locked and loaded" conversation through art, showcasing art in all media that addresses the culture of violence, systemic racism, police brutality, and gun issues in the United States—particularly in how it affects women and children.

This exhibition is curated by Karen Gutfreund of Syracuse. She is a partner in Gutfreund Cornett Art, a curatorial partnership that specializes in creating exhibitions in venues around the U.S. ?on themes of "art as activism" to stimulate dialog, ?raise consciousness ?and encourage social change.

Additional work by 12 artists is also on exhibit as part of this exhibition at the Community Folk Art Center Gallery and Point of Contact Gallery.

The Everson began collecting contemporary Japanese ceramics in earnest in the mid 1970s, an experimental period when artists were applying geometric forms and conceptual strategies to traditional materials and forms. Matthew Olzmann is the author of two collections of poems, Mezzanines, which was selected for the 2011 Kundiman Prize, and Contradictions in the Design. His third book, Constellation Route, is forthcoming from Alice James Books in January 2022. A recipient of fellowships from Kundiman, MacDowell, and the Kresge Arts Foundation, Olzmann's work has appeared in Best American Poetry, Pushcart Prize XLV Kenyon Review, New England Review, Southern Review, and elsewhere. He's previously taught poetry at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and for the InsideOut Literary Arts Project in Detroit, Michigan. He is now a Senior Lecturer of Creative Writing at Dartmouth College and also teaches in the MFA Program for Writers at Warren Wilson College

Nyle DiMarco, Deaf Activist and Winner of America’s Next Top Model and Dancing with the Stars

DiMarco is a deaf activist and ambassador for the deaf community. He won the mirror ball trophy on ABC's "Dancing with the Stars" (season 22) and was the last model standing on The CW's "America's Next Top Model" (cycle 22).

Born into a multigenerational deaf family, he is an honorary spokesperson for Language Equality and Acquisition for Deaf Kids (LEAD-K) and founder of the Nyle DiMarco Foundation, which works to improve the lives of deaf people around the world. DiMarco produced the 2018 return to Broadway of Children of a Lesser God and was a creative collaborator on The ASL App, created by native deaf signers to teach conversational American Sign Language.

With a passion for language, literacy and advocacy within the deaf community and beyond, DiMarco shares his barrier-breaking story as a deaf man who has risen above stereotypes to take the world by storm. Believing that his deafness is "an asset rather than a limitation," he builds a bridge between the deaf and hearing by shining a light on not only the struggles, but also the triumphs of the deaf culture.

Moderated by Kate Corbett Pollack, the coordinator for SU's Disability Cultural Center. She received her M.S. and a Certificate of Advanced Study in Disability Studies from the School of Education at Syracuse University. She received her B.A. in History from Hunter College, and a degree in Fine Arts from Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute in Utica. Kate is active in the local Deaf community in Syracuse.

In 2020, Perry released a 3-part BBC series entitled "Grayson Perry's Big American Road Trip," which chronicled a cross-country examination of the complexities of race, identity, and culture in the United States. Perry also chronicled his American travel in his most recent exhibition, "The MOST Specialest Relationship" at the Victoria Miro Gallery in London. This lecture is sponsored by the CAC Foundation in partnership with the Syracuse University College of Visual and Performing Arts.

The DWC is pleased to welcome back our good friend and crowd favorite Matthew Gavin Frank! His new nonfiction book, Flight of the Diamond Smugglers (about, among other things, the ways in which carrier pigeons were used by diamond smuggling rings in coastal South Africa) was published by W.W. Norton: Liveright in February 2021. He is also the author of the nonfiction books, The Mad Feast: An Ecstatic Tour Through America's Food (W.W. Norton: Liveright, 2015), Preparing the Ghost: An Essay Concerning the Giant Squid and Its First Photographer (W.W. Norton: Liveright, 2014), Pot Farm (The University of Nebraska Press, 2012), and Barolo (The University of Nebraska Press, 2010), as well as several collections of poems.

Directed by Robert Hupp, the 30-minute one-act play stars Kate Hamill and Jason O'Connell as estranged lifelong friends who reunite at a wedding and confront the wounds, losses, and resentments of the past, testing the resilience, dependability, and adult emotional complexities of friendships forged in childhood. This special event is a fundraiser for the Cold Read Festival. It may be accessed free of charge with a donation suggested.

Stephan Wolfert and Dawn Stern star in this comic and profoundly moving duet of a play, performed and video recorded in a trailer, somewhere, perhaps in the middle of nowhere.
