"Deadlocked and Loaded: Disarming America" is a "locked and loaded" conversation through art, showcasing art in all media that addresses the culture of violence, systemic racism, police brutality, and gun issues in the United States—particularly in how it affects women and children.

This exhibition is curated by Karen Gutfreund of Syracuse. She is a partner in Gutfreund Cornett Art, a curatorial partnership that specializes in creating exhibitions in venues around the U.S. ?on themes of "art as activism" to stimulate dialog, ?raise consciousness ?and encourage social change.

Additional work by 12 artists is also on exhibit as part of this exhibition at the Community Folk Art Center Gallery and Point of Contact Gallery.

For nearly a decade, Brooklyn-based artist Steffani Jemison has been deeply invested in examining the ways knowledge is constructed and legitimized. This interest stems from a fascination with frameworks of interpretation and narration, as well as critical theory and Black vernacular traditions. She explores these concepts through a practice that encompasses sculpture, video, installation, sound, and fiction writing.

Light Work commissioned Steffani Jemison to create new work for Urban Video Project as part of an annual moving image commission program. The new work, Figure 8, comes out of Jemison's collaboration with athlete Alexis Page.

The video will be projected onto the north facade of the Everson Museum beginning at dusk.

Cruel April: Arthur Flowers

Arthur Flowers is a novelist, essayist, and performance poet. A native of Memphis, TN, he is the author of novels Another Good Loving Blues and De Mojo Blues; a children's book, Cleveland Lee's Beale Street Band, and a memoir/manifesto, Mojo Rising: Confessions of a 21st Century Conjureman and a graphic nonfiction, I See The Promise Land. He has published shorts and articles and is a blues-based performance poet. He is a founding member/director of New Renaissance Writers Guild, NYC, The Griot Shop, Memphis, and the Pan African Literary Forum. He has been Executive Director of the Harlem Writers Guild. He has been the recipient of NEA and NYSFA awards in fiction and nonfiction.

His novel in progress, Rest for the Weary, is a meditation on prophecy, destiny, fate and the human condition. He is also working on a nonfiction work, The Hoodoo Book of Flowers. He considers having an online literary presence part of being a 21st Century literary man and has a blog, Rootsblog, a cyberhoodoo webspace.

Born in Selma and raised in Centreville, AL, Minnie Bruce Pratt came out as a lesbian in Fayetteville, NC, in 1975. She received her B.A. from the University of Alabama-Tuscaloosa the year after segregationist Gov. George Wallace "stood in the schoolhouse door," and her Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill in 1979. Her books and poems have received awards from the Academy of American Poets, the American Library Association, the Poetry Society of America, Lambda Literary and the Publishing Triangle. Her second book, Crime Against Nature, about losing custody of her children as a lesbian mother, was a New York Times Notable Book of the Year. An anti-racist, anti-imperialist women's liberation activist, Pratt co-authored Yours in Struggle: Three Feminist Perspectives on Anti-Semitism and Racism (1984) with Barbara Smith and Elly Bulkin. Along with lesbian writers Chrystos and Audre Lorde, she received the Lillian Hellman-Dashiell Hammett Award given by the Fund for Free Expression to writers "who have been victimized by political persecution." She is a Managing Editor of Workers World newspaper, and lives in her hometown in Alabama and in Central New York. Her most recent book is Magnified (Wesleyan, March 2021).
