Syracuse and the Underground Railroad Syracuse University College of Arts and Sciences
Price: Free Bird Library, 6th Floor
Syracuse University,
Syracuse
An exhibition that vividly portrays Syracuse's major role as a station along the Underground Railroad, titled "That laboratory of abolitionism, libel, and treason": Syracuse and the Underground Railroad, includes original artifacts from the Library's Special Collections Research Center and other institutions that document the flourishing of antislavery activism in Syracuse and surrounding communities from the 1830s through the 1850s. The exhibition is presented in conjunction with this year's Syracuse Symposium lecture series and its theme of "borders." It is funded by the Kaleidoscope Project, a diversity initiative between the Divisions of Undergraduate Studies and Student Affairs to broaden the understanding of diversity and promote healthy dialogue about related issues at Syracuse University. The College of Arts and Sciences and the Warren and Edith Day Fund at Syracuse University Library have provided additional funding. Special tours and school group visits may be arranged by calling curator William La Moy at 315-443-9752.

Interdisciplinary artist John Freyer returns to his native Syracuse for his first museum exhibition. The exhibit includes components of three different, but inter-related projects: his nationally renowned web-based performance piece, AllMyLifeForSale.Com; a new interactive installation entitled Walm-Art.Com; and Surplus, a sculpture/installation comprised of one-ton bales of surplus clothing. In addition, a twelve-foot rotating Bob's Big Boy sculpture, purchased by Freyer on eBay for the University of Iowa Museum of Art, will be on view in the Sculpture Court. Freyer was recently appointed as Visiting Professor at the University of Iowa, and a pilot of his Second Hand Stories continues to be broadcast by PBS, which is developing a series of the same name.

Art of Gold Lowe Art Gallery
Price: Free Shaffer Art Building
Syracuse University,
Syracuse
There have been several notable exhibitions in recent decades where gold, primarily ancient gold, has figured prominently. Yet, for all the exposure this material has received, contemporary American goldsmithing has been largely overlooked. The Art of Gold is an exhibition of jewelry and objects by studio goldsmiths that puts on display some of the finest work being made in the field today. It is the first major exhibition of its kind in 25 years. Studio goldsmithingdesigning and fabricating objects by hand in a small studio settingis a fairly recent phenomenon. While contemporary goldsmithing has developed into a richly diverse artistic field, showing influences from Pop Art, Minimalism, Neo-Expressionism, and even Conceptual Art, it maintains its own sense of craft and unique historical lineage. The exhibition is composed of 80 objects, including jewelry, hollowware, vessels, small sculptures and other nonjewelry items. While some pieces include stones and precious gems in their designs, they are not objects in which gold is merely a backdrop or frame for other elements. In all of the pieces, gold is the essential focus. The Art of Gold is a celebration of the inventiveness of contemporary goldsmiths and the beauty of traditional materials and processes.

Richard English: Pastoral Perceptions -- An Exhibition of Watercolors: 1982-2005 Redhouse
Price: Free Former Redhouse Theater
219 S. West St.,
Syracuse
The words that come to mind immediately when describing the work of Cazenovia-based watercolor artist, Richard English, are the same words that describe the man, Richard English; quiet, thoughtful, reflective. There is a wonderful symbiotic relationship between the man and his watercolors. His deep attachment to the rural landscape, especially Upstate New York and the low country sea coast of South Carolina, is elegantly captured in his masterfully executed works. There is an aura of ease and relaxation that is evident in the presence of both the artist and his landscapes. His paintings are realistic, employing both the wet-in-wet and dry brush techniques of traditional transparent watercolors. English has been painting since the early 1950's and although he's a mainly self-taught artist, his work as an engineer has influenced both his technique and his style.

Bug Syracuse Stage Melissa Kievman, director
Archbold Theater, Syracuse Stage
820 E. Genesee St.,
Syracuse
What creepy-crawly experiments happen in secret government laboratories? Many have theories. Peter may actually know. He's been there. He only recently skittered away. Or, that's what he tells Agnes between sex and crack cocaine in an out-of-the-way Oklahoma motel room. It's a lonely place but Peter and Agnes aren't exactly alone. Agnes's abusive, ex-con ex-husband slithers in and out. Her lesbian friend R.C flies by. A slimy doctor who may be a robot appears. And, then there's this sudden infestation of unusually aggressive aphids. Mysterious. Playwright Tracy Letts takes a bite out of contemporary anxieties with a stinging thriller that really gets under the skin. An Off-Broadway hit, Bug was the talk of New York last season. Find out what the buzz is about. Nudity. Violence. Conspiracies. Adult language and situations. It's enough to make you itch.

Bill Does Will: An Evening of Shakepeare Salt City Center for the Performing Arts
Price: $10 regular, $6 students and seniors Jazz Central
441 E. Washington St.,
Syracuse
Bill Does Will is a one-man show starring Bill Molesky in a collaborative creative effort with Neil Novelli, the area's acknowledged expert on Shakespeare, and design consultants Karel Blakeley and Shirley Blakeley. When Molsesky asked Novelli for a solo Shakespearean vehicle replete with men, women, dogs, and ships at sea, Novelli provided the concept: a collection of intimate monologues between the character and the audience. The monologues are Shakespeare's. The connecting commentaries are Novelli's. The show opens with successive recitations of Hamlet's To Be Or Not To Be one with the "fourth wall" apparent, the other aimed solely at the audience, demonstrating the power of a character's direct appeal to those hearts in the dark. Some of the evening's characters include Shakespeare's Villains: Richard III, Lear's bastard, Edmund, and Claudius (as song and dance man); Shakespeare's Clowns: Verona's Launce with his dog, Crab; and of course, John Falstaff: and, in themed groupings, a host of others: Lady MacBeth, Juliet's nurse, Richard II, Much Ado's Benedick, Polonius, Malvolio, ...and a clown has the last word with Feste's closing of Twelfth Night. For reservations, phone 315-475-9749.

English has been painting since the early 1950's and although he's a mainly self-taught artist, his work as an engineer has influenced both his technique and his style.

Folkus Project
Westcott Community Center
Paul Geremia
Price: $12 Westcott Community Center
Corner of Euclid Ave. and Westcott St.,
Syracuse
For almost 40 years, Paul Geremia has built a reputation as one of the finest finger-style blues guitarists alive. But as he's quick to point out, it's more than just a job. It's a love affair a lifestyle involving decades of practice and miles of hard travelin'. Geremia immersed himself in various styles of country blues since the mid-60's when he was inspired by performances and personal contact with seminal bluesmen like Son House, Skip James, and Pink Anderson. Geremia was particularly drawn to the driving Piedmont style that joined thumping bass lines to swinging ragtime melodies, but he's equally adept at the deeply emotional Delta blues. What's unique about Geremia's playing is the way his guitar doesn't just accompany his husky, soulful voice but adds dramatic counterpoint through the use of rhythmic flourishes and stunning single-line runs. As if this weren't difficult enough, he's quick to blow a zippy harmonica solo over his intricate fingerpicking. Playing in a variety of tunings, he sets up real conversations between guitar and harmonica that, along with his voice, reach every corner of a song. Combining his interpretations of music by blues heroes like Blind Lemon Jefferson, Robert Johnson, Blind Willie McTell, Scrapper Blackwell, and Blind Blake with his original compositions, Paul Geremia has created a style which is very much his own and which has received accolades in the U.S.A. and Europe too numerous to mention. Geremia has recorded ten solo albums, and has appeared on numerous anthologies and compilation discs. His superb recordings have made him a critical favorite and place Geremia firmly among the legends who inspired and influenced him over the past four decades.

Forever Plaid Opening Night Productions
Price: $22 ticket plus restaurant/bar charge depending on package chosen Glen Loch Restaurant
4626 North St.,
Jamesville
One of the most popular and successful musicals in recent memory, this deliciously goofy revue centers on four young, eager male singers killed in a car crash in the 1950s on the way to their first big concert, and now miraculously revived for the posthumous chance to fulfill their dreams and perform the show that never was. Singing in the closest of harmony, squabbling boyishly over the smallest intonations and executing their charmingly outlandish choreography with over-zealous precision, the "Plaids" are a guaranteed smash, with a program of beloved songs and delightful patter that keeps audiences rolling in the aisles when they're not humming along to some of the great nostalgic pop hits of the '50s. Cast: Jonathon Baldwin (from NYC) is Frankie, Thomas Greene is Jinx, Terry LaCasse is Sparky, and Rob Searle is Smudge. Directed by Bob Brown. Musical Direction by Doug Pyke. Reservations are necessary and can be made by calling the Glen Loch Restaurant at 315-469-6969. There are two ways to enjoy your evening out: The Complete Dinner Theatre Package includes show ticket and full gourmet dinner of your choosing off the Glen Loch Restaurant's delicious menu. Diners will be seated in the downstairs dining room and the meal prices will be determined by the regular restaurant menu. Those guests choosing to eat must be seated NO LATER than 6:30pm on Saturday evenings and 12:30pm for the Sunday Brunch. Cost: $22 theatre ticket plus cost of meal per person. The Light Fare Theatre Package: In an agreement with the Glen Loch Restaurant, Opening Night Productions' patrons will no longer be required to purchase a meal with their theater ticket. The cost of the meal will be replaced by a $10 minimum bar/restaurant charge. This may be applied to appetizers, desserts, drinks and/or coffee. The total expense for tickets will be $32 per person.

Directed by Rick McKay, Broadway, the Golden Age tells the stories of our theatrical legends, how they came to New York, and how they created this legendary century in American theatre. This is the largest cast of legends ever in one film. Follow one filmmaker's search for a Broadway that was lost and the 100 legends that he found. Cinematographer Rick McKay arrived in New York in 1981 and was disappointed to realize that the Broadway of his boyhood dreams had been replaced by rock operas and musicals that celebrated felines over humans. With no crew on budget and one digital camera, McKay traveled for five years and over four continents to seek out the Broadway of his youth; The Golden Age of triple-threat stars that could sing, dance and act.

Congelada Point of Contact Productions
Price: $5 general admission; $3 students Schine Underground, Schine Student Center
Syracuse University,
Syracuse
This remarkable piece, directly from the stage of Teatro del Pueblo in Buenos Aires, was written and will be performed by superb wit and award-winning Argentinean actress, María José Gabín. Congelada is a theater adaptation of How I Became A Nun, (Cómo me hice monja) a novel by César Aira, one of the most prolific contemporary writers in Argentinean literature, author of more than 30 books. The original Spanish version of How I Became a Nun, published in Spain in 1998, was selected as one of the 10 best novels published in Spain that year. The theatrical adaptation of this novel narrates an episode of food poisoning, which triggers the misfortune of a woman who lives "congealed" in a pink colored world, as if everything that has happened to her was nothing more than someone else's story. Thus between the ice cream parlor, dentures, hospitals and school teachers we find ourselves in an hysterical world of passions confronted, full of deranged characters and absurd situations, all conformed in an intimate reflection of a woman fully clad in pink glucose. A splendid treat for the Spanish-speaking community of Central New York, the show will be performed in its original Spanish version with simultaneous electronic English translation. Tickets go on sale on October 31 at the Schine Student Center Box Office. Parking will be available at the Marion and Comstock Ave lots.

Price: $8 Former Redhouse Theater
219 S. West St.,

Anna en el Tropico is a poignant and poetic new play set in Florida in 1929 in a CubanAmerican cigar factory, where cigars are still rolled by hand and "lectors" are employed to educate and entertain the workers. The arrival of a new lector is a cause for celebration, but when he begins to read aloud from Anna Karenina, he unwittingly becomes a catalyst in the lives of his avid listeners, for whom Tolstoy, the tropics and the American dream prove a volatile combination. Chinese Theatre Works uses the story of Little Red Riding Hood a young girl's journey to her grandmother's house and her encounter with a wolf as a way to introduce audiences to characters from several Chinese classics. The result is a cross-cultural artistic extravaganza that integrates the music, acrobatics, pantomime, face painting, and elaborate costumes of Chinese Theatre with a humorous rendition of a well-known children's fable. This appearance is part of Syracuse Symposium, a semester-long intellectual and artistic festival celebrating interdisciplinary thinking, imagining, and creating. The theme this fall is "borders."

Redhouse The Two Headed Boy Quintet
Price: $10 Former Redhouse Theater
219 S. West St.,
Syracuse
This contemporary jazz quintet combines the multiple talents of trumpeter Peter Honan and drummer Jonathan Konya. Peter and Jonathan have worked with various groups around New York City for the past two years, and study jazz performance at Loyola University in New Orleans. Two Headed Boy brings to The Redhouse a mix of original modern jazz compositions and their unique take on more classic tunes. As with many universities ravaged by Hurricane Katrina, Loyola University, nestled in the Uptown section of New Orleans has closed its doors for the fall semester. This has left its over 5,000 students scattered across the United States. This duo, displaced by the storm have found a temporary home here in Syracuse and are currently attending LeMoyne College.

Anna En El Tropico LeMoyne College Repertorio Espanol
Price: $18 adults, $15 students Coyne Center for the Performing Arts
LeMoyne College,
Syracuse
Anna en el Tropico is a poignant and poetic new play set in Florida in 1929 in a CubanAmerican cigar factory, where cigars are still rolled by hand and "lectors" are employed to educate and entertain the workers. The arrival of a new lector is a cause for celebration, but when he begins to read aloud from Anna Karenina, he unwittingly becomes a catalyst in the lives of his avid listeners, for whom Tolstoy, the tropics and the American dream prove a volatile combination. Written by Nilo Cruz. To order tickets, go to www.repertorio.org or call 212-225-9085.

Works by Pérez Celis Point of Contact Gallery
Price: Free Point of Contact Gallery
350 W. Fayette St.,
Syracuse
Currently based in Miami, Argentine artist Pérez Celis' work is broad, interconnected and full of the forms first glimpsed in the vast landscape of his native Argentina. His avid sense of composition, comprised of intersecting planes and the use of rich materials and robust color, produces a thick physical world of layered and piercing planes. His giant-scale public works are featured worldwide and he exhibits extensively in Latin, South and North America. He recently illustrated Jorge Luis Borges' translation of Walt Whitman's epic poem Leaves of Grass ("Hojas de hierba"). In 2001, the former chair of SU's Board of Trustees, Joseph Lampe, established the Iris L. Pérez Celis Fund, in honor of the artist's late wife. This support provides scholarship opportunities for minority art students in VPA.
