On March 3, 1991, a 26-year-old Black man named Rodney King was brutally beaten by officers of the Los Angeles police department. The incident was caught on tape, the first of long line of disturbingly similar videos to go viral. The four officers involved were charged with assault and excessive use of force. A year later they were acquitted by a mostly white jury in the nearby suburb of Simi Valley where the trial had been moved. News of the acquittal set off five days of unrest in South Central Los Angeles, which left 50 dead, 2000 injured, 9,500 arrested, and $1 billion in property damages. Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992 is Anna Deavere Smith's artistic response to these traumatic events. Using more than 350 interviews, Smith creates a mosaic of four dozen characters to ruthlessly probe issues of race and class that set Los Angeles ablaze. First performed in 1994, Twilight remains a stunning, insightful, and relevant work of documentary theatre.

"Deadlocked and Loaded: Disarming America" is a "locked and loaded" conversation through art, showcasing art in all media that addresses the culture of violence, systemic racism, police brutality, and gun issues in the United States—particularly in how it affects women and children.

This exhibition is curated by Karen Gutfreund of Syracuse. She is a partner in Gutfreund Cornett Art, a curatorial partnership that specializes in creating exhibitions in venues around the U.S. ?on themes of "art as activism" to stimulate dialog, ?raise consciousness ?and encourage social change.

Additional work by 12 artists is also on exhibit as part of this exhibition at the Community Folk Art Center Gallery and Point of Contact Gallery.

Carolyne Wright's most recent books are This Dream the World: New & Selected Poems (Lost Horse Press, 2017), whose title poem received a Pushcart Prize and appeared in The Best American Poetry 2009; and the bilingual volume by Chilean poet Eugenia Toledo, Trazas de mapa, trazas de sangre / Map Traces, Blood Traces (Mayapple Press, 2017), a Finalist for the 2018 Washington State Book Award in Poetry, and for the 2018 PEN Los Angeles Award in Translation. Author of nine previous books and chapbooks of poetry, four other volumes of poetry in translation from Spanish and Bengali, and a book of essays, Wright has served as Visiting Poet and professor of Creative Writing at colleges and universities throughout the U.S, and since 2005 she has taught for Richard Hugo House in her native Seattle. A 2020-2021 Fulbright Scholar Award will take her to Bahia after the worldwide pandemic travel advisory is lifted.

Repair of the World follows a typical morning in the life of David, a man in his mid 50s working in the admissions office of a drug clinic. As we witness his attempts to assist, we come in direct contact with the flip side of The War on Drugs. Not the statistics, not the platitudes, but the anonymous and the unseen facing individual wars against addiction. In a job where empathy is all you've got to work with, eventually you have to ask yourself: What is empathy? Is it part of the basic human package? Or is it something we learn? Is it like an endless well you can tap into? Or does it burn out under enough pressure? Is it possible for somebody's emotional pilot light to get snuffed out? And if that's the case, how much time and rehabilitation does it take to get it back?

Viet Thanh Nguyen

Nguyen and his family came to the United States as refugees from Vietnam in 1975. As he grew up, he observed that movies and books about the Vietnam War only focused on Americans. He turned his writing towards lifting the voices and perspectives of the Vietnamese.

His debut novel, The Sympathizer, won the 2016 Pulitzer Prize, the Dayton Literary Peace Prize, and was a finalist for the PEN/Faulkner Award. The New York Times says that the novel "fills a void ... giving voice to the previously voiceless while it compels the rest of us to look at the events of 40 years ago in a new light." His follow-up novel, The Committed, is due to be published this year.

Nguyen is also the author of Nothing Ever Dies: Vietnam and the Memory of War, a finalist for the National Book Award, and The Refugees, a collection of short stories. In 2018, he joined with 17 fellow refugee writers to create The Displaced, with proceeds supporting the International Rescue Committee.

He is the recipient of a MacArthur "Genius" Grant. Nguyen teaches at the University of Southern California and works as a cultural critic-at-large at The Los Angeles Times.
