An exhibition that vividly portrays Syracuse's major role as a station along the Underground Railroad, titled "That laboratory of abolitionism, libel, and treason": Syracuse and the Underground Railroad, includes original artifacts from the Library's Special Collections Research Center and other institutions that document the flourishing of antislavery activism in Syracuse and surrounding communities from the 1830s through the 1850s.

The exhibition is presented in conjunction with this year's Syracuse Symposium lecture series and its theme of "borders." It is funded by the Kaleidoscope Project, a diversity initiative between the Divisions of Undergraduate Studies and Student Affairs to broaden the understanding of diversity and promote healthy dialogue about related issues at Syracuse University. The College of Arts and Sciences and the Warren and Edith Day Fund at Syracuse University Library have provided additional funding.

Kraczyna teaches printmaking and art-on-paper classes for the studio arts program at SU's Division of International Programs Abroad Florence Center. He is the founder and past director of Il Bisonte International School of Advanced Printmaking in Florence, where he taught techniques of color etching. Kraczyna co-authored I Segni Incisi, the first Italian textbook on the history and techniques of etching. He has directed "Studio for Color Etching" workshops in Barga, Lucca and at the International Symposium for Color Etching at Palacky University, Czech Republic. His work has been exhibited in more than 100 solo shows in the United States, Italy, Germany, England, Mexico, Columbia, Czech Republic and Japan, and is represented in the Uffizi Print Collection. Kraczyna holds an MFA from Southern Illinois University and a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design.

Interdisciplinary artist John Freyer returns to his native Syracuse for his first museum exhibition. The exhibit includes components of three different, but inter-related projects: his nationally renowned web-based performance piece, AllMyLifeForSale.Com; a new interactive installation entitled Walm-Art.Com; and Surplus, a sculpture/installation comprised of one-ton bales of surplus clothing. In addition, a twelve-foot rotating Bob's Big Boy sculpture, purchased by Freyer on eBay for the University of Iowa Museum of Art, will be on view in the Sculpture Court. Freyer was recently appointed as Visiting Professor at the University of Iowa, and a pilot of his Second Hand Stories continues to be broadcast by PBS, which is developing a series of the same name.

There have been several notable exhibitions in recent decades where gold, primarily ancient gold, has figured prominently. Yet, for all the exposure this material has received, contemporary American goldsmithing has been largely overlooked. The Art of Gold is an exhibition of jewelry and objects by studio goldsmiths that puts on display some of the finest work being made in the field today. It is the first major exhibition of its kind in 25 years.

Studio goldsmithingdesigning and fabricating objects by hand in a small studio settingis a fairly recent phenomenon. While contemporary goldsmithing has developed into a richly diverse artistic field, showing influences from Pop Art, Minimalism, Neo-Expressionism, and even Conceptual Art, it maintains its own sense of craft and unique historical lineage.

The exhibition is composed of 80 objects, including jewelry, hollowware, vessels, small sculptures and other nonjewelry items. While some pieces include stones and precious gems in their designs, they are not objects in which gold is merely a backdrop or frame for other elements. In all of the pieces, gold is the essential focus. The Art of Gold is a celebration of the inventiveness of contemporary goldsmiths and the beauty of traditional materials and processes.

This year's Advanced Curatorship students departed from the norm in that they chose works outside of an overall theme. The criterion for a work's inclusion was that they justify the reason it belonged. Objects historically important, artistically imaginative or emotionally evocative were all offered for consideration, their merits debated in lively discussions. Students tackled these questions in developing the exhibition: What is art? Why does it matter? How will we ever fill the gallery?

Students explored the vast collections of the Genet Gallery, Light Work, and the University Art Collection to discover objects deserving of a closer look. The result is an exhibition that ponders, promotes and unifies art across all forms. Curator's Choice: Not Your Grandmother's Attic is an eclectic exhibition, a celebration of distinct forms, styles, and statements within art and design.

Richard English: Pastoral Perceptions -- An Exhibition of Watercolors: 1982-2005

The words that come to mind immediately when describing the work of Cazenovia-based watercolor artist, Richard English, are the same words that describe the man, Richard English; quiet, thoughtful, reflective. There is a wonderful symbiotic relationship between the man and his watercolors. His deep attachment to the rural landscape, especially Upstate New York and the low country sea coast of South Carolina, is elegantly captured in his masterfully executed works. There is an aura of ease and relaxation that is evident in the presence of both the artist and his landscapes. His paintings are realistic, employing both the wet-in-wet and dry brush techniques of traditional transparent watercolors. English has been painting since the early 1950's and although he's a mainly self-taught artist, his work as an engineer has influenced both his technique and his style.

Worse still, the victim is the man who broke up Henry's first marriage. Moreover Henry will be arriving shortly with a V.I.P. who might take a dim view of bodies in the drawing room. Clarissa's fast talking places her and Pippa in some hair-raising experiences. By the time Henry arrives, the murderer has been unmasked and all is normal so normal that Henry is unable to believe Clarissa when she explains why there are no refreshments for their honored guest.

Fayetteville artist Sarah McCoubrey, an Associate Professor of Art at Syracuse University, has created an archive of material surrounding the artistic life of the fictional character Hannah Morse, a 19th-century woman who is struggling to become a great landscape painter. In the process, Morse has invented several devices to aid her in her painting. McCoubrey draws upon her 20 years as a landscape painter to reveal what Morse learns in her journey as an artist. For this exhibit, McCoubrey will answer the question, "What if Hannah Morse met the real-life Matilda Joslyn Gage?" Gage was not only a leader in the early women’s rights movement, but later in life became an amateur painter.

Parking available nearby at the United Church of Fayetteville, 310 E. Genesee St. The Gage House is not handicapped accessible.

Brooks Williams with special guest Paul Asbell

An oft-heard reaction to a Brooks Williams concert is: "Where¹d they hide the second guitarist?" The same could be said of a Paul Asbell concert. So what would happen if these two virtuoso guitarists appeared in concert? We predict that the audience will muse, "Where¹d they hide the extra two guitarists?" The Brooks Williams and Paul Asbell pairing is a virtual guitar summit whose time is long overdue. Both guitarists will be on-stage for the entire concert swapping fingerstyle, blues, bottleneck slide, jazz and American Songbook favorites.

Brooks Williams has a musical vision that spans continents and genres: from the American-primitive fingerpicking of John Fahey to the folk-baroque counterpoint of John Renbourne, from the Brazilian bossa-nova chord chemistry of Luiz Bonfá to the Bahamian calypso rhythms of Joseph Spence. Despite his genre-busting reputation, however, at the root of every Brooks Williams riff is the blues.

Paul Asbell has earned an underground reputation as a true "musician's musician," from his early years playing blues on Chicago's South Side, to his present multi-faceted career based out of northern Vermont. He has played and recorded with Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Howlin' Wolf, Lightnin' Hopkins, Otis Rush, Magic Sam, Earl Hooker, Lightnin' Slim, Paul Butterfield, Sam Lay, Pops Staples, Donny Hathaway, and numerous others. In the 1970s he formed the jazz-fusion band, Kilimanjaro, and recorded two award-winning albums, which led to numerous national tours and concert dates.

Interdisciplinary artist John Freyer returns to his native Syracuse for his first museum exhibition. The exhibit includes components of three different, but inter-related projects: his nationally renowned web-based performance piece, AllMyLifeForSale.Com; a new interactive installation entitled Walm-Art.Com; and Surplus, a sculpture/installation comprised of one-ton bales of surplus clothing. In addition, a twelve-foot rotating Bob's Big Boy sculpture, purchased by Freyer on eBay for the University of Iowa Museum of Art, will be on view in the Sculpture Court. Freyer was recently appointed as Visiting Professor at the University of Iowa, and a pilot of his Second Hand Stories continues to be broadcast by PBS, which is developing a series of the same name.

There have been several notable exhibitions in recent decades where gold, primarily ancient gold, has figured prominently. Yet, for all the exposure this material has received, contemporary American goldsmithing has been largely overlooked. The Art of Gold is an exhibition of jewelry and objects by studio goldsmiths that puts on display some of the finest work being made in the field today. It is the first major exhibition of its kind in 25 years.

Studio goldsmithingdesigning and fabricating objects by hand in a small studio settingis a fairly recent phenomenon. While contemporary goldsmithing has developed into a richly diverse artistic field, showing influences from Pop Art, Minimalism, Neo-Expressionism, and even Conceptual Art, it maintains its own sense of craft and unique historical lineage.

The exhibition is composed of 80 objects, including jewelry, hollowware, vessels, small sculptures and other nonjewelry items. While some pieces include stones and precious gems in their designs, they are not objects in which gold is merely a backdrop or frame for other elements. In all of the pieces, gold is the essential focus. The Art of Gold is a celebration of the inventiveness of contemporary goldsmiths and the beauty of traditional materials and processes.

This year's Advanced Curatorship students departed from the norm in that they chose works outside of an overall theme. The criterion for a work's inclusion was that they justify the reason it belonged. Objects historically important, artistically imaginative or emotionally evocative were all offered for consideration, their merits debated in lively discussions. Students tackled these questions in developing the exhibition: What is art? Why does it matter? How will we ever fill the gallery?

Students explored the vast collections of the Genet Gallery, Light Work, and the University Art Collection to discover objects deserving of a closer look. The result is an exhibition that ponders, promotes and unifies art across all forms. Curator's Choice: Not Your Grandmother's Attic is an eclectic exhibition, a celebration of distinct forms, styles, and statements within art and design.

Sarah McCoubrey Art Exhibit

Fayetteville artist Sarah McCoubrey, an Associate Professor of Art at Syracuse University, has created an archive of material surrounding the artistic life of the fictional character Hannah Morse, a 19th-century woman who is struggling to become a great landscape painter. In the process, Morse has invented several devices to aid her in her painting. McCoubrey draws upon her 20 years as a landscape painter to reveal what Morse learns in her journey as an artist. For this exhibit, McCoubrey will answer the question, "What if Hannah Morse met the real-life Matilda Joslyn Gage?" Gage was not only a leader in the early women’s rights movement, but later in life became an amateur painter.

It is funded by the Kaleidoscope Project, a diversity initiative between the Divisions of Undergraduate Studies and Student Affairs to broaden the understanding of diversity and promote healthy dialogue about related issues at Syracuse University. The College of Arts and Sciences and the Warren and Edith Day Fund at Syracuse University Library have provided additional funding.

Kraczyna co-authored I Segni Incisi, the first Italian textbook on the history and techniques of etching. He has directed "Studio for Color Etching" workshops in Barga, Lucca and at the International Symposium for Color Etching at Palacky University, Czech Republic. His work has been exhibited in more than 100 solo shows in the United States, Italy, Germany, England, Mexico, Columbia, Czech Republic and Japan, and is represented in the Uffizi Print Collection. Yet, for all the exposure this material has received, contemporary American goldsmithing has been largely overlooked. The Art of Gold is an exhibition of jewelry and objects by studio goldsmiths that puts on display some of the finest work being made in the field today. It is the first major exhibition of its kind in 25 years.

Studio goldsmithingdesigning and fabricating objects by hand in a small studio settingis a fairly recent phenomenon. While contemporary goldsmithing has developed into a richly diverse artistic field, showing influences from Pop Art, Minimalism, Neo-Expressionism, and even Conceptual Art, it maintains its own sense of craft and unique historical lineage.

The exhibition is composed of 80 objects, including jewelry, hollowware, vessels, small sculptures and other nonjewelry items. While some pieces include stones and precious gems in their designs, they are not objects in which gold is merely a backdrop or frame for other elements. In all of the pieces, gold is the essential focus. The Art of Gold is a celebration of the inventiveness of contemporary goldsmiths and the beauty of traditional materials and processes.

Students tackled these questions in developing the exhibition: What is art? Why does it matter? How will we ever fill the gallery?

Students explored the vast collections of the Genet Gallery, Light Work, and the University Art Collection to discover objects deserving of a closer look. The result is an exhibition that ponders, promotes and unifies art across all forms. Curator's Choice: Not Your Grandmother's Attic is an eclectic exhibition, a celebration of distinct forms, styles, and statements within art and design.

The exhibition is presented in conjunction with this year's Syracuse Symposium lecture series and its theme of "borders." It is funded by the Kaleidoscope Project, a diversity initiative between the Divisions of Undergraduate Studies and Student Affairs to broaden the understanding of diversity and promote healthy dialogue about related issues at Syracuse University. The College of Arts and Sciences and the Warren and Edith Day Fund at Syracuse University Library have provided additional funding.

Kraczyna teaches printmaking and art-on-paper classes for the studio arts program at SU's Division of International Programs Abroad Florence Center. He is the founder and past director of Il Bisonte International School of Advanced Printmaking in Florence, where he taught techniques of color etching. Kraczyna co-authored I Segni Incisi, the first Italian textbook on the history and techniques of etching. He has directed "Studio for Color Etching" workshops in Barga, Lucca and at the International Symposium for Color Etching at Palacky University, Czech Republic. His work has been exhibited in more than 100 solo shows in the United States, Italy, Germany, England, Mexico, Columbia, Czech Republic and Japan, and is represented in the Uffizi Print Collection. Kraczyna holds an MFA from Southern Illinois University and a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design.

Richard English: Pastoral Perceptions -- An Exhibition of Watercolors: 1982-2005

The words that come to mind immediately when describing the work of Cazenovia-based watercolor artist, Richard English, are the same words that describe the man, Richard English; quiet, thoughtful, reflective. There is a wonderful symbiotic relationship between the man and his watercolors. His deep attachment to the rural landscape, especially Upstate New York and the low country sea coast of South Carolina, is elegantly captured in his masterfully executed works. There is an aura of ease and relaxation that is evident in the presence of both the artist and his landscapes. His paintings are realistic, employing both the wet-in-wet and dry brush techniques of traditional transparent watercolors. English has been painting since the early 1950's and although he's a mainly self-taught artist, his work as an engineer has influenced both his technique and his style.

His work has been exhibited in more than 100 solo shows in the United States, Italy, Germany, England, Mexico, Columbia, Czech Republic and Japan, and is represented in the Uffizi Print Collection. Kraczyna holds an MFA from Southern Illinois University and a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design.

Interdisciplinary artist John Freyer returns to his native Syracuse for his first museum exhibition. The exhibit includes components of three different, but inter-related projects: his nationally renowned web-based performance piece, AllMyLifeForSale.Com; a new interactive installation entitled Walm-Art.Com; and Surplus, a sculpture/installation comprised of one-ton bales of surplus clothing. In addition, a twelve-foot rotating Bob's Big Boy sculpture, purchased by Freyer on eBay for the University of Iowa Museum of Art, will be on view in the Sculpture Court. Freyer was recently appointed as Visiting Professor at the University of Iowa, and a pilot of his Second Hand Stories continues to be broadcast by PBS, which is developing a series of the same name.

There have been several notable exhibitions in recent decades where gold, primarily ancient gold, has figured prominently. Yet, for all the exposure this material has received, contemporary American goldsmithing has been largely overlooked. The Art of Gold is an exhibition of jewelry and objects by studio goldsmiths that puts on display some of the finest work being made in the field today. It is the first major exhibition of its kind in 25 years.

Studio goldsmithingdesigning and fabricating objects by hand in a small studio settingis a fairly recent phenomenon. While contemporary goldsmithing has developed into a richly diverse artistic field, showing influences from Pop Art, Minimalism, Neo-Expressionism, and even Conceptual Art, it maintains its own sense of craft and unique historical lineage.

The exhibition is composed of 80 objects, including jewelry, hollowware, vessels, small sculptures and other nonjewelry items. While some pieces include stones and precious gems in their designs, they are not objects in which gold is merely a backdrop or frame for other elements. In all of the pieces, gold is the essential focus. The Art of Gold is a celebration of the inventiveness of contemporary goldsmiths and the beauty of traditional materials and processes.

This year's Advanced Curatorship students departed from the norm in that they chose works outside of an overall theme. The criterion for a work's inclusion was that they justify the reason it belonged. Objects historically important, artistically imaginative or emotionally evocative were all offered for consideration, their merits debated in lively discussions. Students tackled these questions in developing the exhibition: What is art? Why does it matter? How will we ever fill the gallery?

Students explored the vast collections of the Genet Gallery, Light Work, and the University Art Collection to discover objects deserving of a closer look. The result is an exhibition that ponders, promotes and unifies art across all forms. Curator's Choice: Not Your Grandmother's Attic is an eclectic exhibition, a celebration of distinct forms, styles, and statements within art and design.

Richard English: Pastoral Perceptions -- An Exhibition of Watercolors: 1982-2005

The words that come to mind immediately when describing the work of Cazenovia-based watercolor artist, Richard English, are the same words that describe the man, Richard English; quiet, thoughtful, reflective. There is a wonderful symbiotic relationship between the man and his watercolors. His deep attachment to the rural landscape, especially Upstate New York and the low country sea coast of South Carolina, is elegantly captured in his masterfully executed works. There is an aura of ease and relaxation that is evident in the presence of both the artist and his landscapes. His paintings are realistic, employing both the wet-in-wet and dry brush techniques of traditional transparent watercolors. English has been painting since the early 1950's and although he's a mainly self-taught artist, his work as an engineer has influenced both his technique and his style.

With such an overwhelming musical contribution, it's easy to overlook the carefully crafted stories at the heart of their plays. The story of the von Trapp family's dramatic escape from the Nazis reasserts the importance of saying no to malevolence and cruelty, especially when "legitimized" by popular approval. This is also a story of how a young and inexperienced woman opens a heart long closed to love and affection. It is a story of courage in the face of danger, and a story of finding hope and value in art. The music, we know, is sublime. It's time to become reacquainted with the power of this wonderful story.

Clarissa, the second wife of Henry Hailsham Brown, is adept at spinning tales of adventure for their bored diplomatic circle in this Agatha Christie tale. When a murder takes place in her drawing room she finds live drama much harder to cope with, especially as she suspects the murderer might be her young stepdaughter Pippa. Worse still, the victim is the man who broke up Henry's first marriage. Moreover Henry will be arriving shortly with a V.I.P. who might take a dim view of bodies in the drawing room. Clarissa's fast talking places her and Pippa in some hair-raising experiences. By the time Henry arrives, the murderer has been unmasked and all is normal so normal that Henry is unable to believe Clarissa when she explains why there are no refreshments for their honored guest.
