"Deadlocked and Loaded: Disarming America" is a "locked and loaded" conversation through art, showcasing art in all media that addresses the culture of violence, systemic racism, police brutality, and gun issues in the United States—particularly in how it affects women and children.

This exhibition is curated by Karen Gutfreund of Syracuse. She is a partner in Gutfreund Cornett Art, a curatorial partnership that specializes in creating exhibitions in venues around the U.S. ?on themes of "art as activism" to stimulate dialog, ?raise consciousness ?and encourage social change.

Additional work by 12 artists is also on exhibit as part of this exhibition at the Community Folk Art Center Gallery and Point of Contact Gallery.

The Everson began collecting contemporary Japanese ceramics in earnest in the mid 1970s, an experimental period when artists were applying geometric forms and conceptual strategies to traditional materials and forms. The exhibition highlights this under-recognized generation of artists who are now credited with laying the groundwork for today's contemporary ceramic movement in Japan.

Ángelo Néstore is a non-binary queer poet, performer & translator. They are director of the poetry publisher Letraversal and co-direct the Irreconciliables International Poetry Festival. Their first poetry collection was Adán o nada (Bandaàparte Editores). Lawrence Schimel's translation of their second poetry collection Impure Acts (Indolent Books) was a finalist for the Thom Gunn Award; in the original Spanish, this collection won the 32nd Hiperión Poetry Award. Their third collection, Hágase mi voluntad (Pre-textos) won the 20th Emilio Prados Award.

Poet Kim Addonizio's eighth poetry collection is Now We're Getting Somewhere (W.W. Norton, March 2021). She has also published two novels, two short story collections, and two books on writing poetry: The Poet's Companion (with Dorianne Laux) and Ordinary Genius: A Guide for the Poet Within. Her most recent publications are a memoir, Bukowski in a Sundress (Penguin) and a book of poems, Mortal Trash (W.W. Norton). Her work has been recognized with a Guggenheim Fellowship, two NEA Fellowships, two Pushcart Prizes, and other awards, and has been translated into several languages. Her collection Tell Me was a National Book Award Finalist.

Steffani Jemison: Figure 8

For nearly a decade, Brooklyn-based artist Steffani Jemison has been deeply invested in examining the ways knowledge is constructed and legitimized. This interest stems from a fascination with frameworks of interpretation and narration, as well as critical theory and Black vernacular traditions. She explores these concepts through a practice that encompasses sculpture, video, installation, sound, and fiction writing.

Light Work commissioned Steffani Jemison to create new work for Urban Video Project as part of an annual moving image commission program. The new work, Figure 8, comes out of Jemison's collaboration with athlete Alexis Page.

The video will be projected onto the north facade of the Everson Museum beginning at dusk.

Arthur Flowers is a novelist, essayist, and performance poet. A native of Memphis, TN, he is the author of novels Another Good Loving Blues and De Mojo Blues; a children's book, Cleveland Lee's Beale Street Band, and a memoir/manifesto, Mojo Rising: Confessions of a 21st Century Conjureman and a graphic nonfiction, I See The Promise Land. He has published shorts and articles and is a blues-based performance poet. He is a founding member/director of New Renaissance Writers Guild, NYC, The Griot Shop, Memphis, and the Pan African Literary Forum. He has been Executive Director of the Harlem Writers Guild. He has been the recipient of NEA and NYSFA awards in fiction and nonfiction.

His novel in progress, Rest for the Weary, is a meditation on prophecy, destiny, fate and the human condition. He is also working on a nonfiction work, The Hoodoo Book of Flowers. He considers having an online literary presence part of being a 21st Century literary man and has a blog, Rootsblog, a cyberhoodoo webspace.
