After more than a year of COVID-19 isolation, the Everson Museum is grateful to shake off the blues by exhibiting life-affirming works from the permanent collection that are filled with joy, humor, and above all, color. Beyond the Blue is presented in collaboration with Art Macao 2021. In addition to a physical exhibition at the Everson, these works will be shared digitally with millions of visitors to Art Macao, an international art festival presented in museums, hotels, and other popular tourist destinations near Hong Kong.

Although known primarily for her lustrous ceramic vessels, legendary artist Beatrice Wood was a prolific drawer with a penchant for depicting sidelong glances and body language between couples (and thruples!). Particularly relevant during a pandemic that will long be remembered for social distancing, Tête-à-Tête-à-Tête is a celebration of Wood's uncanny ability to capture the inherent drama of social interactions with a few deft strokes of her pen.

Victoria Schonfeld (1950-2019) was a prominent New York lawyer, collector, and philanthropist whose discerning eye was matched only by the fierceness of devotion to her friends. From the time she began collecting ceramics in the 1990s, Schonfeld developed lasting friendships with the artists who caught her eye. Schonfeld was particularly devoted to championing female artists, including Betty Woodman, Alison Britton, and Carol McNicoll, as well as younger artists like Lauren Mabry and Rain Harris. Her taste encompassed everything from classical beauty to pointedly political works, all linked by her boundless curiosity.

Long before her untimely death, Schonfeld began donating works by artists she admired to museums across the United States, including the Everson Museum of Art. It is with the deepest gratitude that the Everson accepts key works from the Schonfeld collection that will endure as a tribute to her generosity and lasting network of friendships. Mutual Affection marks the debut of the Victoria Schonfeld Collection at the Everson, fleshed out by additional works loaned by her family and friends. Each object in this exhibition stands on its own merit, but also represents a node in Schonfeld's vast network of reciprocal relationships.

In Blue and Red, Zhou Tao conducts a mesmerizing formal exploration of ambiguous zones: two public squares, one in Guangzhou, China, during a street festival, and one in Bangkok, Thailand, amidst political protests, the terrain surrounding a heavy metal mine, and a mountain village in southern China. Through the edit, these very different spaces merge into a single ambivalent reality. A mysterious colored light envelopes the animate and inanimate denizens in an otherworldly skin. Masses congregate, tents are erected, families take selfies, children play, hillsides collapse, police march, violence erupts.

Mystery Mansion: The Ravenloon Scenario

Enter the residence of the recently deceased 1890s robber baron, Cornelius D. Ravenloon, for an interactive mystery dinner theater where you search for clues that will enable you to uncover which of his three daughters he has designated to lead his vast empire. Players investigate several sections of his mansion searching for the combination to a briefcase where the eccentric, some say mad, Ravenloon kept his will. You must solve puzzles, inspect clues, and work with other players to obtain information. Players will also have a chance to meet his three daughters along with his butler, personal physician, and estate lawyer who hold information critical to answering the question: Who will control the Ravenloon Empire? Mystery Mansion is a format created to incorporate current health and safety guidelines. These guidelines are subject to change and Mystery Mansion is designed to change with them. All performers are fully vaccinated.

Premiering in 2012 with The Covey Theatre Company, Playing God received its New York City debut in 2013 at the New York International Fringe Festival.

Who: Artist Carrie Mae Weems' work spans images, text, film, and performance. She is represented in public and private collections around the world, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Tate Modern, Museum of Modern Art, and Museum of Contemporary Art.

What: Who What When Where centers around a photographic series of the same name by Carrie Mae Weems.
