Isolated due to a life-threatening illness, Caroline hasn't been to school in months. Confined to her room, she relies on Instagram, Facebook and a stuffed turtle for company. That is until classmate Anthony bursts in—unexpectedly and bearing waffle fries, some Walt Whitman poetry, and a literature project due the next day. He's enthusiastic, athletic, and charming in a nerdy sort of way, but Caroline is wary. Still, an unlikely friendship develops as a run of the mill homework assignment reveals the pair's hopes and dreams, and they come to realize that Whitman's sense of interconnectedness means more to their lives than they could have imagined. This sharp, funny, and tender-hearted play by Lauren Gunderson won the Steinberg/American Theatre Critics Association New Play Award in 2014.

The Everson began collecting contemporary Japanese ceramics in earnest in the mid 1970s, an experimental period when artists were applying geometric forms and conceptual strategies to traditional materials and forms. The exhibition highlights this under-recognized generation of artists who are now credited with laying the groundwork for today's contemporary ceramic movement in Japan.

For nearly a decade, Brooklyn-based artist Steffani Jemison has been deeply invested in examining the ways knowledge is constructed and legitimized. This interest stems from a fascination with frameworks of interpretation and narration, as well as critical theory and Black vernacular traditions. She explores these concepts through a practice that encompasses sculpture, video, installation, sound, and fiction writing.

Light Work commissioned Steffani Jemison to create new work for Urban Video Project as part of an annual moving image commission program. The new work, Figure 8, comes out of Jemison's collaboration with athlete Alexis Page.

The video will be projected onto the north facade of the Everson Museum beginning at dusk.

Chef Sleyrow Mason is the owner and operator of SOULutions, located at the Salt City Market. Sley is an industry veteran who began cooking alongside his mother at the early age of 5. It was in the kitchen, with his mother, that he learned some of the basics of traditional southern dishes. In his later years, Sleyrow attended a culinary program offered by Syracuse's Sydney Johnson center. After its completion, he began working in some of Syracuse's finest restaurants, honing his skills as a certified grillmaster, kitchen manager, and sous chef. Upon the passing of his mother, Chef Sley began cooking for his family and friends as a way to keep them all connected. Now he is serving up his family recipes at Salt City Market and at catered events.

Vanessa Johnson is a griot or storyteller. She tells traditional tales from Africa and African American culture through story performances, one woman shows, mixed media quilts, plays, short stories, and sing tales with her storytelling band, Matie Massie. Her tales of social justice include the voices of the enslaved and of abolitionists who fought against slavery in the United States. She lends her voice to the diverse activists of the Women's Rights and Civil Rights Movements. She also tells Earth-Justice Tales and shares biographical tales of living as an African-American woman in the U.S. and part-time in Ghana.

Cuban-born Pablo Medina is the author of 19 books, most recently the novel The Cuban Comedy and the poetry collection Soledades (poems in Spanish). His critically acclaimed translations include García Lorca's Poet in New York (with Mark Statman) and Alejo Carpentier's seminal novel The Kingdom of This World. Medina's work has appeared in various languages and in magazines and periodicals throughout the world. Winner of many awards for his work, including fellowships from the Rockefeller Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Guggenheim Foundation, Medina lives in Williamsville, VT, and is on faculty at the Warren Wilson MFA Program for Writers.
