Price: Free Bird Library, 6th Floor
Syracuse University,
Syracuse
The bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland, on December 21, 1988 claimed the lives of 270 individuals from 21 nations. Among those lost were 35 students returning home from a semester abroad through Syracuse University. This exhibition of materials donated to the Pan Am Flight 103/Lockerbie Air Disaster by the victims' families, friends, advocates, and affected communities commemorates the 30th anniversary of the tragedy through an exploration of the ways in which the lives of the victims have been remembered. Whether through scholarship, public advocacy, art, or physical memorials, we ensure their lives and the lessons learned from their deaths are not forgotten.

"in the clearing.", curated by Evan Starling-Davis, is a multidisciplinary art installation exploring the emotional ripple effects of individuals residing within systemic gun violence of America's Rust Belt region. Interrogating the extremities of a community, the ensemble of work combines elements of literature, video art, collage, painting, and audio clippings to framework a sensoria of storytelling— or the sum of one's perception to interpret environment via staged narrative.

Rodrigo Valenzuela: American Type Light Work Gallery
Light Work Gallery
316 Waverly Ave., Syracuse University,
Syracuse
Rodrigo Valenzuela's work boldly addresses themes of labor, power, and representation. For a Chilean artist living in America at a moment in which the president of the United States continues pressing for a border wall, the underlying narrative of Valenzuela's work — of immigration and the struggles of the working class — is as charged as ever. The title of the exhibition, American Type, refers to a 1955 essay in which art critic Clement Greenberg frames the work of abstract expressionist painters such as Pollock, Kline, Motherwell, and Rothko as distinctly American. Greenberg proposed that post-war American painting was more about the act of painting itself than about any complex idea of representation. Valenzuela finds it interesting to challenge this concept and, as he puts it, to contemplate "how much the absence of content has become the American gold." He doesn't argue that abstraction is necessarily without subject or emotion, but Valenzuela questions Greenberg and art world elitism more generally by making his own subversive abstractions that he imbues with social-political meaning. Valenzuela's approach to representation in his work draws our attention to the extensive labor of his artistic process. Every aspect of his work shows a trace of his own labor, from the building of studio assemblages, to the photographic steps that lead to the final prints. Even the wooden frames that hold the work have been cut, assembled, and painted by his hand. Labor is inherent in the making of all art, but for Valenzuela it becomes a compelling central subject.

Founded in 1875, the Social Art Club is a women's club dedicated to the study of art in a group setting. The Club has an extensive history of supporting the Everson, including financial support for the acquisition of some of the Museum's most iconic pieces, such as Adrian Saxe's Untitled vessel from 1980, which graces the cover of the Museum's American Ceramics catalog. Over the past decade, the Social Art Club's gifts have strengthened the Everson's connections to Central New York through donations of work by indigenous and regional artists.

The LYNNeS Folkus Project
Price: $18 regular, $15 members May Memorial Unitarian Society
3800 E. Genesee St.,
Syracuse
The two witty songwriters play off each other live, often leaving the audience howling with laughter with their between-song banter. Lynn Miles has a slight edge in the humor department, not surprising given Lynne Hanson's burden of a lifetime of carrying the weight of a superfluous E. In addition to their beautiful harmonies, the two are skilled multi-instrumental musicians (acoustic and electric guitars, piano, harmonica, mandolin, percussion). Miles is one of Canada's most accomplished singer/songwriters, with fourteen albums to her credit, the winner of four Canadian Folk Music awards (including 2011 English Songwriter of the Year), and a 2003 Juno Award for Roots and Traditional Solo Album of the Year. Her song "Black Flowers" appeared on Claire Lynch's Grammy-nominated album "North By South." Hanson has been playing her brand of "porch music with a little red dirt" for the past 10 years, has released 6 albums, won the Colleen Peterson Award for songwriting, and been nominated for a Canadian Folk Music Award.

The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee Baldwinsville Theatre Guild Colin Keating, director
Price: $28 regular, $24 students/seniors ($5 discount for members) First Presbyterian Church of Baldwinsville
64 Oswego St.,
Baldwinsville
Audience members are captivated as an eclectic group of sixth-graders arrives at the 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, each eager to win for very different reasons. Sweet and shy Olive brings only her best friend (the dictionary) with her to the bee; bold and hyperallergic speller William Barfee uses his "magic foot" to propel him to greatness; former champion Chip is struggling with his burgeoning puberty; easily distracted Leaf is unconvinced that he's smart enough to be a challenger; overachiever Marcy is disappointed by her consistent success; and politically aware Logainne Schwartzandgrubenierre only wants to impress her gay dads. In hilarious, touching, and catchy songs, each speller reveals his/her hopes, struggles, and passions as they make their way through the competition. ?The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee will have the audience falling in love, both with the show itself and its "perspicacious," "jocular," and "effervescent" spellers.

The smash comedy hit of the London and Broadway stages, this much-revived classic from Noel Coward, the playwright of Private Lives, offers up fussy, cantankerous novelist Charles Condomine, re-married but haunted (literally) by the ghost of his late first wife, the clever and insistent Elvira who is called up by a visiting "happy medium," one Madame Arcati. As the (worldly and un-) personalities clash, Charles' current wife, Ruth, is accidentally killed, "passes over," joins Elvira, and the two "blithe spirits" haunt the hapless Charles into perpetuity.

*CLOSING EARLY* Rodrigo Valenzuela: American Type Light Work Gallery
Light Work Gallery
316 Waverly Ave., Syracuse University,
Syracuse
Light Work is closing early today due to the weather.

Uncommon Views: Photography by Jack Kurz Baltimore Woods Weeks Art Gallery
Price: Free Baltimore Woods Nature Center
4007 Bishop Hill Rd.,
Marcellus
For this exhibit, Jack Kurz has captured moments in his photographs that we often miss, perhaps because we are distracted, we don't know where to look, or the subject of our observation is too elusive. Who among us has not had the experience of observing the activity of a butterfly, only to have it fly away before we can fully appreciate its color and pattern? And don't we feel disappointment when we realize that a bird has moved so quickly that we missed its capture of prey? How then do wildlife photographers manage to produce their amazing photos? "You just have to be patient," is the answer that Kurz will give you. Those who see Jack Kurz's photographs will enjoy the sharp focus in his images, the beautiful color, and the stories of our natural world that each image conveys.

Paul the Beatle The 443 Social Club
Price: $15 in advance, $20 at the door if available The 443 Social Club
443 Burnet Ave.,
Syracuse
In a brilliant one-man Beatlemania-esque show, Bob Halligan Jr portrays Paul McCartney through his career as a FAB. Paul has a conversation with the audience—and himself—that inevitably leads back to the songs we so deeply love. Early on, he receives a visit from John Lennon, who asserts his "creative dominance" of the group. Through the laughter and the tears (and the clothes), Paul traces the band's musical journey and his particular contributions to it, doing so with no backing tracks or help from off/onstage musicians. As group unity frays, he begins to muse about where he might go musically after the break-up. And he even takes requests! The audience participates, and the songs and the man remind us that FAB never goes out of style. Bob Halligan's own songs have been recorded by Cher, KISS, Michael Bolton, Judas Priest, and he also wrote the hit song "Don't Close Your Eyes" by KIX. He has 9 Gold or Platinum records and his Celtic pop-rock band Ceili Rain has toured internationally for 20 years. Bob is an Adjunct Professor at Syracuse University teaching songwriting, film scoring and the music business. He was recently the only American invited to sing at a Papal event in Italy, and where he met Pope Francis. Paul the Beatle is a unique, theatrical presentation of the best-known songbook in the last 50 years, complete with sing-alongs and mop-top wigs. Note: Much of our seating is communal: tables and chairs/barstools and sofas or loveseats. You should expect to share a table or sofa with other attendees. Pre-sale tickets available on EventBrite or at the cafe during regular business hours.

Shirley Maxwell has gathered the media together to announce that her company, Wonder Labs, is back on the map with the unveiling of an incredible new invention: a time machine! Insiders say it was invented by lab assistant Nick Van Castle. Or was it really invented by has-been inventor Nathan Brandmark? Or was it stolen by Nathan who used it to go back in time and claim he invented it? Or the other way around? Whatever happened, one thing's for sure: the clock is ticking down on someone.

Shoppingtown Mall, Entrance No. 4 (adjacent to parking garage),
Dewitt

Whether through scholarship, public advocacy, art, or physical memorials, we ensure their lives and the lessons learned from their deaths are not forgotten.

The Cadleys with Pepper and Sassafras Words and Music Songwriter Showcase
Price: Suggested donation $10-$15 Seneca Street Brew Pub
315 E. Seneca St.,
Manlius
The Cadleys are one of the most popular acoustic bands in the Northeast. Following in the tradition of great male-female duets like George Jones and Tammy Wynette, Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, and Emmylou Harris and Gram Parsons, John and Cathy show how two voices blended in seamless harmony can produce one powerful sound. Joining the duo for this show is first-call veteran bassist John Dancks, a member of the Syracuse Area Music Hall of Fame—who will also perform with Pepper and Sassafras. Pepper and Sassafras is the dynamic acoustic duo of Jeffrey Pepper Rodgers, grand prize winner of the John Lennon Songwriting Contest, and multi-instrumentalist Wendy Sassafras Ramsay. Rodgers delivers masterful band-in-a-box guitar work while Ramsay, harmonizer extraordinaire, adds flute, clarinet, guitar, accordion, and her quirky originals to the mix. Pepper and Sassafras were finalists for Best Duo at FreshGrass and featured on public radio's Folk Alley. Each Words and Music concert opens with a short open mic with four performance slots, each 12 minutes long — only original songs are allowed. Online sign-ups begin two weeks before the show until the slots are filled. Admission is free if you are performing, and you are welcome to sell your CDs and other merch. To allow room for other songwriters, open-mic performers must wait at least six months between appearances.

The Marriage of Figaro Syracuse University Setnor School of Music Setnor Opera Theater James Tapia, director
Price: Free Setnor Auditorium, Crouse College
Syracuse University,
Syracuse
When Count Almaviva, with the aid of Figaro (the "Barber of Seville"), married his Countess, he swore off the so-called droit de seigneur, the feudal right of the Lord of the Manor to spend the wedding night with the bride of any of his servants; he also rewarded Figaro with a post as his valet. Now, several years later, he has come to regret that decision, and the focus of his attention is none other than Figaro's fiancée Susanna, maidservant to the Countess. The situation is further complicated by the existence of a lawsuit and the presence of one Cherubino, a girl-crazy page; needless to say, there is ample plotting and counter-plotting in this domestic comedy, and, in the end, the women emerge victorious. The libretto by Lorenzo da Ponte is an adaptation of the controversial French play of the same name by Pierre Caron de Beaumarchais. Because it depicted a nobleman being outwitted by his servants, it is widely acknowledged to have contributed to the civil unrest that led to the French Revolution. The SU version will be performed in English, and has been trimmed and adapted to suit the needs of the outstanding student cast. For most concert events in Setnor Auditorium, free and accessible concert parking is available on campus in the Q-1 lot. When parking for concert events, please inform parking attendants that you are attending an event at Setnor Auditorium in Crouse College so they may direct you.
