Black Utopias Syracuse University Library Special Collections Research Center
Price: Free Bird Library, 6th Floor
Syracuse University,
Syracuse
Co-curated by Dr. Joan Bryant, associate professor in the African American Studies Department, and Dr. Lucy Mulroney, interim senior director of the Special Collections Research Center, "Black Utopias" commemorates the 50th anniversary of the publication of The Autobiography of Malcolm X, the best-selling narrative of one of the most prominent men of the Civil Rights era. This anniversary holds special significance for Syracuse University because the Libraries' Special Collections Research Center is home to the records of Grove Press, the avant-garde publisher of the Autobiography. Grove hailed the book as one of its "most important" publications. The first printing of 10,000 copies sold out before it was released in October 1965. "Black Utopias" takes the personal transformations that form the narrative arc of Malcolm X's Autobiography as the framework for exploring a range of utopian visions that have shaped Black American life. Although utopias are, by definition, the stuff of dreams, the examples presented in this exhibition are firmly rooted in historical experiences of subjugation, inequality, and injustice. They are at once visionary and modest endeavors to craft worlds of freedom, unity, power, equality, and beauty. The exhibit will feature the handwritten letter that Malcolm X sent to Alex Haley during his pilgrimage to Mecca, as well as other unique and rare materials from the collections. It includes documents by little-known individuals and such prominent figures as W.E.B. Dubois, Langston Hughes, Madam C. J. Walker, James Ford, and Martin Luther King, Jr.

Resistance: Work by Najee Dorsey Community Folk Art Center
Price: Free Community Folk Art Center
805 E. Genesee St.,
Syracuse
Our exhibition season opens with "Resistance" by artist, collector, and founder/CEO of Black Art in America Najee Dorsey. His mixed media works features a number of the heroes of the civil rights movements as well as 20th century activists. An essay entitled My Art is my Voice, written by Dr. Kamasi C. Hill describes the works stating, "Najee Dorsey's mixed media series "Resistance," is an artistic commentary on the various ways individuals have used their voice and bodies to "resist" and fight against the powers that be. Partially inspired by the Occupy Movement, Dorsey's renditions include the Haitian Freedom Fighter Toussaint L'ouverture, A Native American man taking up modern arms, and an ode to unsung she-ro Claudette Colvin, amongst others."

Gallery 54
54 E. Genesee St.,
Skaneateles
Ken's paintings represent Universal Energy with each color, shape, stroke and placement predicated upon the one before it. This is what you see if you go beyond electrons and quarks. His paintings paint themselves, Ken wants people to look at his paintings and see paintings within paintings within paintings. He wants positive energy to come out of looking at his work. His paintings are not planned, they happen. Ken calls his style Decorative Energist.

2015 Light Work Grants in Photography Exhibition: Allison Beondé, Thilde Jensen, Costa Sakellariou Light Work Gallery
Light Work Gallery
316 Waverly Ave., Syracuse University,
Syracuse
Allison Beondé is a visual artist currently living in Syracuse. She holds her B.F.A. from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, in partnership with Tufts University. She has exhibited work in the Boston area and is the recipient of a 2015 Traveling Fellowship through the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Thilde Jensen was born in Denmark and moved to New York City in 1997. Six years later, her life and career as a documentary and editorial photographer were cut short by a sudden development of severe environmental illness. Jensen's first monograph, The Canaries, is about environmental illness and was published in 2013. It has since received much international acclaim. Her book was selected by many as one of the best photobooks of the year 2013. The Canaries was shortlisted for the Paris Photo/Aperture Foundation First Photobook Award 2013, longlisted for the Kraszna-Krausz Book Awards 2014, nominated for the Kassel Best Photobook Award 2014, and is in the collection at MoMA. The project has been exhibited in solo shows at Light Work and the Center for Photography at Woodstock, NY; featured in the New York Times, Esquire Russia, Wired.com rawfile, Vision Magazine China, Business Insider, Slate.com; and selected for Slate.com's Best Photography Shows of 2012. The Canaries was featured in the TONY: 2012 exhibition at the Everson Museum of Art in Syracuse. Jensen is a 2013 NYFA Fellowship recipient. Costa Sakellariou is a photographer currently living and working in Binghamton, NY. From the mid-1980s until 1992, he was a working photographer based in Athens, Islamabad, and New Delhi. His clients were the weekly news magazines and his work was represented by JB Pictures in New York City. In 1992, he began work on a long-term project on the dwindling Greek population of Istanbul. The project was published as a book titled The Last Greeks of Istanbul, and was one of the first photobooks to be published in Greece. The Benaki Museum plans to acquire a portfolio of the work for their permanent photography collection. In 1998, Sakellariou and his wife moved to Binghamton. A year later, he began teaching photography at Binghamton University, where he continues to teach today.

Gideon Barnett: After Edith Light Work Gallery
Price: Free Light Work Gallery
316 Waverly Ave., Syracuse University,
Syracuse
Gideon Barnett's exhibition "After Edith" brings together a collection of images that he produced by documenting vandalized photography books found in public libraries. The project began in Miami, FL, with the discovery of a copy of Emmet Gowin's Photographs in which the iconic nude portraits of Gowin's wife Edith had been defaced by prurient library visitors. Parts of the images had been cut with a razor blade and, in some instances, entirely torn out of the book. This deliberate removal of "provocative" imagery and the psychology of what may have sparked such an act fascinated Barnett, and prompted a closer look at the visual byproducts—the way in which the cuts open through to another image, for example, or how the tearing of a page can create a compelling juxtaposition of photographs. The vandalized images are unquestionably elegant and beautiful when taken out of context and framed on the wall, yet all together Barnett's photographs also point to a disconcerting fearful, destructive, or even violent intention behind them.

The Three Graces were known in ancient mythology as enchanting goddesses who personified the primary attributes of creativity: Beauty, Wonder and Joy. In a recasting of this mythical triumvirate, the Everson introduces three contemporary artists from New York – Polly Apfelbaum, Tony Feher and Carrie Moyer – whose spectacular abstract works embody these qualities. More than just a typical exhibition, Three Graces is also a revelatory experience, as the artists have created new works inspired by pieces from the Museum's collection, which are also included. From Moyer's biomorphic paintings, to Apfelbaum's playful textiles, and Feher's magical installations, Three Graces connects the past and present through beauty, wonder, and joy.

Agamemnon Syracuse University Drama Department Rodney Hudson, director
Storch Theater, Syracuse Stage
820 E. Genesee St.,
Syracuse
Fire in the night signals the return of Agamemnon from 10 long years of war in Troy. Triumphant and with a captive slave, the prophetess Cassandra, in tow, the warrior king arrives home and is welcomed by Clytemnestra, wife and mother who seethes with a vengeance born of the slaughter of their daughter Iphigenia. Revenge begets revenge; fate will be fulfilled. The first great play of Aeschylus' Oresteia trilogy, Agamemnon delivers a visceral and haunting theatrical experience.

Mandala Paintings by Ken Nichols Gallery 54
Gallery 54

Syracuse University,
Syracuse
The exhibit presents over 15 years of Pearsall's career documenting military events and persons. Curated by Theresa Moir, a second year Syracuse University graduate student pursuing concurrent degrees in Museum Studies and Art History, this exhibition draws its content from Pearsall's combat photography taken overseas on active duty in the Air Force, as well as her more recent Veterans Portrait Project. Stacy L. Pearsall got her start as an Air Force photographer at the age of 17. During her time in the service, she traveled to over 41 countries, and attended S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University. Now combat disabled and retired from military service, Pearsall continues to work worldwide as a freelance photographer, and is an author, educator, military consultant, public speaker and founder of the Veterans Portrait Project. Pearsall was one of only two women to win NPPA's Military Photographer of the Year competition, and the only woman to have earned it twice. She's been honored as the Air Force Veteran of the Year by the Air Force Band and PBS, presented the Trojan Labor American Hero Award, honored with the Daughters of the American Revolution Margaret Cochran Corbin Award, lauded by the White House as a Champion of Change, and holds an honorary doctoral degree from The Citadel.

Three Graces Everson Museum of Art
Price: $5 suggested donation Everson Museum of Art
401 Harrison St.,
Syracuse

In conjunction with the exhibition of The Otolith Group's "Anathema" at UVP Everson, UVP and the Everson Museum will host a special screening of The Otolith Group's "The Radiant" followed by a live streaming Q&A with co-founding member, Kodwo Eshun. (Note: Due to illness, Kodwo Eshun will be standing in for co-founder Anjalika Sagar for the Q&A portion of the event.) "The Radiant" explores the aftermath of March 11, 2011, when the Great Tohoku Earthquake struck the North East Coast of Japan at 2:46pm, triggering a tsunami that killed tens of thousands and causing the partial meltdown of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. In the fissures opened by these catastrophes, The Radiant travels through time and space, invoking the historical promise of nuclear energy and summoning the future threat of radiation that converge upon the benighted present. Under these conditions, the illuminated cities and evacuated villages of Japan can be understood as a laboratory for the global nuclear regime that exposes its citizens to the necropolitics of radiation.

Mandala Paintings by Ken Nichols Gallery 54
Gallery 54

The exhibit presents large-scale images captured by one of professional photography's most respected practitioners. Heisler's iconic portraits of celebrities, athletes, and world leaders are instantly recognizable for their technical mastery and thoughtful responsiveness, many of which have appeared as cover images for well-known magazines. Gregory Heisler's portraits have appeared as cover images on more than 70 issues of Time magazine, and his stunning portraits of Julia Roberts, Hillary Clinton, Muhammad Ali, Bruce Springsteen and others have appeared in Life, Esquire, Fortune, Sports Illustrated, and many more. Hard Earned: The Military Photographs of Stacy Pearsall Syracuse University Art Museum
Price: Free Syracuse University Art Museum, Shaffer Art Building

The mesmerizing and haunting footage, filmed both in and from the ocean and projected at 1/50 of the speed at which it was recorded, shows the sea to be a vast and watery expanse full of slow-moving, unidentifiable forms.

Three Graces Everson Museum of Art
Price: $5 suggested donation Everson Museum of Art
401 Harrison St.,
Syracuse

Three Graces Everson Museum of Art
Price: $5 suggested donation Everson Museum of Art
401 Harrison St.,
Syracuse

He Maketh a Path to Shine After Him; One Would Think the Deep to be Hoary (2013) Everson Museum of Art
Everson Museum of Art
401 Harrison St.,
Syracuse
Filmmakers Véréna Paravel and Lucien Castaing-Taylor, of the Harvard Sensory Ethnography Lab, drew from footage obtained while shooting their award-winning movie Leviathan (2012) to create this film. The mesmerizing and haunting footage, filmed both in and from the ocean and projected at 1/50 of the speed at which it was recorded, shows the sea to be a vast and watery expanse full of slow-moving, unidentifiable forms.

Gods and Monsters: Three Centuries of Portraiture Everson Museum of Art
Everson Museum of Art
401 Harrison St.,
Syracuse
This exhibition represents an overview of the portraiture genre for over three centuries, examining how artists have portrayed themselves and others within different contexts and in a variety of media and styles. From 19th-century painted miniatures to contemporary color photographs, these portraits drawn from the Everson collection depict a heterogeneous cast of characters both remembered and forgotten, lauded and reviled. Stretching the conventions of the genre, the exhibition includes works by Andy Warhol, William Wegman and others as well as more traditional portrait paintings by artists such as Cecelia Beaux and Gilbert Stuart.

Mandala Paintings by Ken Nichols Gallery 54
Gallery 54

Hard Earned: The Military Photographs of Stacy Pearsall Syracuse University Art Museum
Price: Free Syracuse University Art Museum, Shaffer Art Building

"Anathema" can be understood as an object-oriented video that isolates and recombines the magical gestures of dream factory capitalism. "Anathema" proposes itself as a prototype for a counter-spell assembled from the possible worlds of capitalist sorcery.

Opening: Borderlines: The Art of Consuelo Jimenez Underwood ArtRage Gallery
Price: Free ArtRage Gallery
505 Hawley Ave.,
Syracuse
There will be an opening reception this evening 7:00-9:00 pm. This solo exhibition is, in part, the result of Consuelo Underwood creating a site-specific mixed media installation on an ArtRage gallery wall. It will also include a selection of her fiber and woven art from the past 30 years. Underwood says her work "is a reflection of personal border experiences: the interconnectedness of societies, insisting on beauty in struggle, and celebrating the notion of 'seeing' this world through my tricultural lens. I think we, as a nation, should be taking care of the land and its flowers. The 'borders' are taking a toll on the flora and fauna of America. The ecological balance has been altered and the 'border' is creating a desert wasteland that will cross the entire North American continent."

Price: $25 non-members, $15 members Former Redhouse Theater
219 S. West St.,
Syracuse
An original musical by and starring resident music director Patrick Burns. Between the ages of 14 and 17, Patrick Burns lived with four foster families in Oakland, CA. His self-written, self-performed musical details this experience with a plethora of jaw-dropping and side-splitting anecdotes, and a bizarre cast of horrific, hilarious, and ultimately heartbreaking characters. Burns is accompanied onstage by a four-piece band led by music director Bridget Moriarty.

Three Graces Everson Museum of Art
Price: $5 suggested donation Everson Museum of Art
401 Harrison St.,
Syracuse

Artist Talk: Consuelo Jimenez Underwood ArtRage Gallery
Price: Free ArtRage Gallery
505 Hawley Ave.,
Syracuse
Consuelo Jimenez Underwood is the daughter of migrant agricultural workers, a Chicana mother and a father of Huichol Indian descent. Her indigenous heritage gave her the strength and purpose to infiltrate, play the game and survive. Trained as a child to cross borders real and psychological, Underwood walks between opposing issues. Living in the middle as an infiltrator, she has learned to navigate contested territories: as a picker in the fields, as a student in school, and as an artist using indigenous weaving tradition as fine art. Her wall installations are an attempt to recreate that journey, to relive the tension of a highly volatile border region embodied by a young girl, and to re-imagine the border as a place where the spirit can roam free. Underwood is neither from Mexico nor the United States, she is of the borderlands. She does not create textiles in the traditional sense, but uses textiles to express personal and political ideas about her Chicana heritage and experience. Her earliest memories are of crossing back and forth through the border city of Calexico from Mexicali to work in the fields of Vacaville and Sacramento. Experiencing the border as a child was both fantastic and horrifying. The border was the backdrop for her childhood, enigmatic and ever present. As a child, Underwood learned that the border was a force to be reckoned with. The fear that she experienced so viscerally at a young age stirred in her a fight for survival, to preserve her spirit, driving her to create using a deliberate language, aesthetic and message.

Hard Earned: The Military Photographs of Stacy Pearsall Syracuse University Art Museum
