Black Utopias Syracuse University Library Special Collections Research Center
Price: Free Bird Library, 6th Floor
Syracuse University,
Syracuse
Co-curated by Dr. Joan Bryant, associate professor in the African American Studies Department, and Dr. Lucy Mulroney, interim senior director of the Special Collections Research Center, "Black Utopias" commemorates the 50th anniversary of the publication of The Autobiography of Malcolm X, the best-selling narrative of one of the most prominent men of the Civil Rights era. This anniversary holds special significance for Syracuse University because the Libraries' Special Collections Research Center is home to the records of Grove Press, the avant-garde publisher of the Autobiography. Grove hailed the book as one of its "most important" publications. The first printing of 10,000 copies sold out before it was released in October 1965. "Black Utopias" takes the personal transformations that form the narrative arc of Malcolm X's Autobiography as the framework for exploring a range of utopian visions that have shaped Black American life. Although utopias are, by definition, the stuff of dreams, the examples presented in this exhibition are firmly rooted in historical experiences of subjugation, inequality, and injustice. They are at once visionary and modest endeavors to craft worlds of freedom, unity, power, equality, and beauty. The exhibit will feature the handwritten letter that Malcolm X sent to Alex Haley during his pilgrimage to Mecca, as well as other unique and rare materials from the collections. It includes documents by little-known individuals and such prominent figures as W.E.B. Dubois, Langston Hughes, Madam C. J. Walker, James Ford, and Martin Luther King, Jr.

Joanne Balfour and Barb Schramm: Theorums and Victorian Santas Gallery 54
Gallery 54
54 E. Genesee St.,
Skaneateles
Both Barbara Schramm and Joanne Balfour are well known in the Central New York art community. Schramm is a painter of old-world Victorian Santas, and Joanne Balfour uses 19th-century techniques for inspiration for her theorem paintings. Joanne Balfour was drawn to the history and type of home decorative arts done in 17th and 18th century England and America. Her theorem paintings exhibit a technique practiced by young ladies in early 19th-century American academies. Stencils were often provided by their teachers and used in various combinations by the girls to create their oil paintings or watercolors on cotton velveteen, often embellished with freehand details. Barbara Schramm's Old World, Victorian Santas (or Father Christmases) are painted on quarter-sawn Finger Lakes sycamore, oak or pine. The reverse of each painting indicates where in the world the depicted Santa became popular.

Gideon Barnett: After Edith Light Work Gallery
Price: Free Light Work Gallery
316 Waverly Ave., Syracuse University,
Syracuse
Gideon Barnett's exhibition "After Edith" brings together a collection of images that he produced by documenting vandalized photography books found in public libraries. The project began in Miami, FL, with the discovery of a copy of Emmet Gowin's Photographs in which the iconic nude portraits of Gowin's wife Edith had been defaced by prurient library visitors. Parts of the images had been cut with a razor blade and, in some instances, entirely torn out of the book. This deliberate removal of "provocative" imagery and the psychology of what may have sparked such an act fascinated Barnett, and prompted a closer look at the visual byproducts—the way in which the cuts open through to another image, for example, or how the tearing of a page can create a compelling juxtaposition of photographs. The vandalized images are unquestionably elegant and beautiful when taken out of context and framed on the wall, yet all together Barnett's photographs also point to a disconcerting fearful, destructive, or even violent intention behind them.

2015 Light Work Grants in Photography Exhibition: Allison Beondé, Thilde Jensen, Costa Sakellariou Light Work Gallery
Light Work Gallery
316 Waverly Ave., Syracuse University,
Syracuse
Allison Beondé is a visual artist currently living in Syracuse. She holds her B.F.A. from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, in partnership with Tufts University. She has exhibited work in the Boston area and is the recipient of a 2015 Traveling Fellowship through the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Thilde Jensen was born in Denmark and moved to New York City in 1997. Six years later, her life and career as a documentary and editorial photographer were cut short by a sudden development of severe environmental illness. Jensen's first monograph, The Canaries, is about environmental illness and was published in 2013. It has since received much international acclaim. Her book was selected by many as one of the best photobooks of the year 2013.

The Canaries was shortlisted for the Paris Photo/Aperture Foundation First Photobook Award 2013, longlisted for the Kraszna-Krausz Book Awards 2014, nominated for the Kassel Best Photobook Award 2014, and is in the collection at MoMA.

Over and Over 914Works
Price: Free 914Works
914 E. Genesee St.,
Syracuse
Work by Stefan Marc Zoller and Brent Michael Erickson, both graduate students in the SU School of Art, is featured in the new exhibition "Over and Over." Memory plays a significant role in the work of both artists, both in the sense of drawing from a memory and in the use of repetition. The repeated motif in Zoller's "Interior Witness Group" is based on a nondescript yet familiar space that has been the site of years of memory. Through its repetition, Zoller contemplates and confronts the host of memory to which it has borne witness. Erickson's "White Noise" presents works both in the present and past as documentation of temporary wall drawings, which no longer exist, are paired next to lithographs to question how the memory of a work can be used to inform new works. "Over and Over" is meant to question the role memory plays in the artist's studio as well as how these memories can relate to others to create a connection or conversation.

Hard Earned: The Military Photographs of Stacy Pearsall Syracuse University Art Museum
Price: Free Syracuse University Art Museum, Shaffer Art Building
Syracuse University,
Syracuse
The exhibit presents over 15 years of Pearsall's career documenting military events and persons. Curated by Theresa Moir, a second year Syracuse University graduate student pursuing concurrent degrees in Museum Studies and Art History, this exhibition draws its content from Pearsall's combat photography taken overseas on active duty in the Air Force, as well as her more recent Veterans Portrait Project. Stacy L. Pearsall got her start as an Air Force photographer at the age of 17. During her time in the service, she traveled to over 41 countries, and attended S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University. Now combat disabled and retired from military service, Pearsall continues to work worldwide as a freelance photographer, and is an author, educator, military consultant, public speaker and founder of the Veterans Portrait Project. Pearsall was one of only two women to win NPPA's Military Photographer of the Year competition, and the only woman to have earned it twice. She's been honored as the Air Force Veteran of the Year by the Air Force Band and PBS, presented the Trojan Labor American Hero Award, honored with the Daughters of the American Revolution Margaret Cochran Corbin Award, lauded by the White House as a Champion of Change, and holds an honorary doctoral degree from The Citadel.

Three Graces Everson Museum of Art
Price: $5 suggested donation Everson Museum of Art
401 Harrison St.,
Syracuse
The Three Graces were known in ancient mythology as enchanting goddesses who personified the primary attributes of creativity: Beauty, Wonder and Joy. In a recasting of this mythical triumvirate, the Everson introduces three contemporary artists from New York – Polly Apfelbaum, Tony Feher and Carrie Moyer – whose spectacular abstract works embody these qualities. More than just a typical exhibition, Three Graces is also a revelatory experience, as the artists have created new works inspired by pieces from the Museum's collection, which are also included. From Moyer's biomorphic paintings, to Apfelbaum's playful textiles, and Feher's magical installations, Three Graces connects the past and present through beauty, wonder, and joy.

Borderlines: The Art of Consuelo Jimenez Underwood ArtRage Gallery
Price: Free ArtRage Gallery
505 Hawley Ave.,
Syracuse
This solo exhibition is, in part, the result of Consuelo Underwood creating a site-specific mixed media installation on an ArtRage gallery wall. It will also include a selection of her fiber and woven art from the past 30 years. Underwood says her work "is a reflection of personal border experiences: the interconnectedness of societies, insisting on beauty in struggle, and celebrating the notion of 'seeing' this world through my tricultural lens. I think we, as a nation, should be taking care of the land and its flowers. The 'borders' are taking a toll on the flora and fauna of America. The ecological balance has been altered and the 'border' is creating a desert wasteland that will cross the entire North American continent."

The Acoustic Guitar Project Words and Music Songwriter Showcase
Price: $12 Jazz Central
441 E. Washington St.,
Syracuse
The Acoustic Guitar Project is a songwriting experiment that originated in New York City and has spread around the world. In each city, a guitar circulates from songwriter to songwriter, and each person has one week to write a song on that guitar and capture it on a handheld recorder. Projects are underway in 43 cities, from Buenos Aires to Boston, Havana to Hanoi, Minneapolis to Moscow, and São Paulo to Syracuse. The project began in Syracuse in 2014 with ten songwriters and a guitar handmade in Maryland by Minor Bird Instruments. In the fall of 2015 the Syracuse guitar circulated again, and the songwriters will all perform their new project songs—and more—at this special concert featuring Eddie Zacholl, Jeff Jones, Kim Monroe and Chris Eves, Joe Driscoll, and Donna Dennihy.

Back by popular demand: David Sedaris' perfect antidote to holiday madness. For those who like a little jeer with their Christmas cheer, The Santaland Diaries offers Crumpet, a 33-year-old starving artist turned Macy's elf.

The Canaries was shortlisted for the Paris Photo/Aperture Foundation First Photobook Award 2013, longlisted for the Kraszna-Krausz Book Awards 2014, nominated for the Kassel Best Photobook Award 2014, and is in the collection at MoMA. The project has been exhibited in solo shows at Light Work and the Center for Photography at Woodstock, NY; featured in the New York Times, Esquire Russia, Wired.com rawfile, Vision Magazine China, Business Insider, Slate.com; and selected for Slate.com's Best Photography Shows of 2012. The Canaries was featured in the TONY: 2012 exhibition at the Everson Museum of Art in Syracuse. Jensen is a 2013 NYFA Fellowship recipient. Costa Sakellariou is a photographer currently living and working in Binghamton, NY. From the mid-1980s until 1992, he was a working photographer based in Athens, Islamabad, and New Delhi. His clients were the weekly news magazines and his work was represented by JB Pictures in New York City. In 1992, he began work on a long-term project on the dwindling Greek population of Istanbul. The project was published as a book titled The Last Greeks of Istanbul, and was one of the first photobooks to be published in Greece. The Benaki Museum plans to acquire a portfolio of the work for their permanent photography collection. In 1998, Sakellariou and his wife moved to Binghamton. A year later, he began teaching photography at Binghamton University, where he continues to teach today.

For those who like a little jeer with their Christmas cheer, The Santaland Diaries offers Crumpet, a 33-year-old starving artist turned Macy's elf. It's the most wonderful time of the year, but who would know it from the bad Santas, naughty elves, cranky kids, and pushy parents who test Crumpet's last elfin nerve. With sardonic wit, Sedaris takes us all playfully to task for plunging into the Christmas $pirit while missing the point. For mature elves only.

Humorist Jean Shepherd's memoir of growing up in the Midwest in the 1940s follows 9-year-old Ralphie Parker in his quest to get a genuine Red Ryder BB gun under the tree for Christmas. All the elements from the beloved motion picture are here, including the family's temperamental exploding furnace; Scut Farkas, the school bully; the boys' experiment with a wet tongue on a cold lamppost; the Little Orphan Annie decoder pin; Ralphie's father winning a lamp shaped like a woman's leg in a net stocking; Ralphie's fantasy scenarios and more.

Curated by Domenic Iacono, Director of the Syracuse University Art Galleries, this exhibition presents a small but powerful overview of Heisler's career photographing some of the world's most influential persons. Gregory Heisler's portraits have appeared as cover images on more than 70 issues of Time magazine, and his stunning portraits of Julia Roberts, Hillary Clinton, Muhammad Ali, Bruce Springsteen and others have appeared in Life, Esquire, Fortune, Sports Illustrated, and many more. Heisler has been said to combine "the eye of an artist, the mind of a scientist, and the heart of a journalist." His photographic career has spanned over 35 years, and among the many awards he has received are the Alfred Eisenstadt Award and the Leica Medal of Excellence. A sought-after speaker and educator, teaching classes and seminars throughout the country and overseas, Heisler was appointed a Distinguished Professor of Photography in the Multimedia Photography & Design program at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University in 2014. His bestselling book, Gregory Heisler: 50 Portraits, will be available for sale in the Gallery Shop.

"Anathema" can be understood as an object-oriented video that isolates and recombines the magical gestures of dream factory capitalism.

Ralphie pleads his case before his mother, his teacher, and even Santa Claus himself, at Higbee's Department Store. The consistent response: "You'll shoot your eye out!" All the elements from the beloved motion picture are here, including the family's temperamental exploding furnace; Scut Farkas, the school bully; the boys' experiment with a wet tongue on a cold lamppost; the Little Orphan Annie decoder pin; Ralphie's father winning a lamp shaped like a woman's leg in a net stocking; Ralphie's fantasy scenarios and more.

"Anathema" (2011), by The Otolith Group, reimagines the microscopic behavior of liquid crystals undergoing turbulence as a sentient entity that possesses the fingertips and the eyes enthralled by the LCD touch-screen. "Anathema" can be understood as an object-oriented video that isolates and recombines the magical gestures of dream factory capitalism. "Anathema" proposes itself as a prototype for a counter-spell assembled from the possible worlds of capitalist sorcery.

Our "Most Wonderful Time" Show Salt City Improv Theater
Price: $10 Salt City Improv Theatre
Shoppingtown Mall, Sears Wing,
Dewitt
This month, something incredible and joyful happens. It's a magical time, for people both young and old. A time when family and friends come together, and celebrate the wonders of the universe. A sacred day that reaffirms our belief in a higher power, and restores our faith in mankind. Yes — the new Star Wars movie is coming! Sorry...did you think we meant Christmas? Sure, the holidays are important, too. But, c'mo — Luke and Han and the gang are back! Besides, nothing says "festive" more than a good ol' light saber battle! Red and green flashing. (OK, maybe we're reaching here.) Anyway, we've heard there's some kind of "War On Christmas" and we don't want to get in the middle of that. Apparently, the problem is mostly between a presidential candidate (whose name rhymes with "Dump")...and a mediocre coffee shop chain (whose name rhymes with "GWAR sucks.") Actually, when we heard about this whole "War On Christmas" thing, we were only half-listening — and we thought they said, "Go see Star Wars on Christmas." Now, that's something you won't have to Force on us. Join our house team, Pork Pie Hutt (who Kenobi more hilarious), as they sleigh you with holiday cheer...performing their special brand of improv comedy (in the style of the hit TV show, Whose Line Is It, Anyway.) Opening the show will be SkittleFett.

Dasher's Magical Gift CNY Arts Dance Centre North
Crouse Hinds Concert Theater, Mulroy Civic Center
411 Montgomery St.,
Syracuse
It's a few days before the big day and everyone in Santa's workshop is buzzing with excitement about the biggest Christmas ever! Presents are being made, Santa is checking his list, and the reindeer are warming up and getting ready for the big flight. Plus, with more kids on the Nice List than ever before, Santa has announced that he is going to choose an extra reindeer to help pull the sleigh. But the biggest excitement of all is the imminent arrival of Dasher, leader of Santa's sleigh team and fastest of them all! Everyone is excited to see him and no one more so than his number one reindeer fan, Peppermint (her friends call her Pepper), who is hoping to get his autograph. Unfortunately, Dasher has a secret problem that is about to become a lot less secret. It seems that amidst all of the glitz and glamour of being a holiday celebrity, Dasher has lost his ability to fly! As Christmas approaches and everyone is counting on him to lead the way, it looks like he doesn't have enough Christmas spirit to guide the sleigh. The situation goes from bad to worse and it looks like Christmas may be cancelled, but with the help of Pepper and a couple of very lost penguins, Dasher will remember what the holiday season is all about and the Spirit of Christmas will prevail. Dasher's Magical Gift is the successor to the 35-year-long production of The Adventures of Rudolph.

Tonight's show will be preceded by dinner at 6:30 pm. Humorist Jean Shepherd's memoir of growing up in the Midwest in the 1940s follows 9-year-old Ralphie Parker in his quest to get a genuine Red Ryder BB gun under the tree for Christmas.

Gods and Monsters: Three Centuries of Portraiture Everson Museum of Art
Everson Museum of Art
401 Harrison St.,
Syracuse
This exhibition represents an overview of the portraiture genre for over three centuries, examining how artists have portrayed themselves and others within different contexts and in a variety of media and styles. From 19th-century painted miniatures to contemporary color photographs, these portraits drawn from the Everson collection depict a heterogeneous cast of characters both remembered and forgotten, lauded and reviled. Stretching the conventions of the genre, the exhibition includes works by Andy Warhol, William Wegman and others as well as more traditional portrait paintings by artists such as Cecelia Beaux and Gilbert Stuart.

Price: $17 CNY Playhouse
Shoppingtown Mall, Entrance No. 4 (adjacent to parking garage),
Dewitt
Humorist Jean Shepherd's memoir of growing up in the Midwest in the 1940s follows 9-year-old Ralphie Parker in his quest to get a genuine Red Ryder BB gun under the tree for Christmas.
