Built on the pair's original, improvisation-rich compositions and evocative, virtuosic instrumentalism, Room to Spare is at once a gathering place for and conversation between their wide ranging musical influences. Dissolving barriers between diverse musical vocabularies—from jazz and classical to folk, rock, and pop—the duo invites listeners into the present with a genre-defying music of striking immediacy.

The program will consist of selections from the duo's new work inspired by Italo Calvino's novel Invisible Cities.

Combining historical folk music from Cape Breton, Scotland, and Ireland, 18th-century settings of traditional Scottish tunes, and well-known Baroque pieces, this lively, wide-ranging program explores the deep connections between aural folk traditions and the Baroque canon. Audiences are encouraged to tap their feet to the music, cheer after tune changes, or get up and dance.

Founded in 2018 by Lydia Becker, Julia Connor, and Sarah Douglass, the Berwick Fiddle Consort (BFC) performs historical folk music on period instruments. Approaching fiddle tunes from a multi-faceted perspective that combines baroque violin technique, aural folk traditions, and study of historical manuscripts, BFC offers an exciting counterpoint to the traditional canon of historical repertoire and the classical music experience.
