Kindred Beasts: The 2016 Everson Biennial Everson Museum of Art
Everson Museum of Art
401 Harrison St.,
Syracuse
The Everson Biennial has been an important platform for contemporary art by New York State artists since its inception in 1974, offering an outlet for creative visual expression and facilitating lively conversations about both what contemporary art is and what it has the power to become. "Kindred Beasts" continues this tradition by presenting a carefully selected group of eight artists whose work focuses on the use of fiber and clay. Each artist interprets the medium in unique and innovative ways, while remaining deeply engaged with tradition and respectful of the past. Representing six counties across the state, the artists are Joe Fyfe, Jeffrey Gibson, Sarah Hewitt, Liz Lurie, Matt Nolen, Sarah Saulson, Bobby Silverman, and Linda Sormin.

Kate Gilmore: Touch like this, Hold like that Everson Museum of Art
Everson Museum of Art
401 Harrison St.,
Syracuse
New York-based artist Kate Gilmore combines humor and physical endurance in her feminist-inspired works to create strikingly memorable performances and videos. Gilmore's performances typically showcase the artist or other women femininely dressed and engaged in monotonous, physically arduous, and often rather inane tasks that call out and disrupt gender stereotypes. For the Everson, Gilmore presents a selection of video performances spanning more than a decade as well as a new temporary sculptural installation created specifically for the Everson Community Plaza. Linking the indoor and outdoor components, performers will activate the public sculpture throughout the summer.

Fake Upstate: Art and Artifacts by Paul Kozlowski ArtRage Gallery
Price: Free ArtRage Gallery
505 Hawley Ave.,
Syracuse
Owner and sole artist of the Fake Gallery in Los Angeles for 14 years, Paul Kozlowski gathered a cult following among various Hollywood celebrities along with many regular people. Stand-up comedian and writer for The Chris Rock Show, The Jon Stewart Show, Mr. Show, and The Ellen DeGeneres Show, among others, and actor whose movie credits include Shakes the Clown and Punchline, Kozlowski accidentally entered the art world when he opened a performance venue in Hollywood. In order to evade the red tape of opening a theater or cabaret, Paul registered the venue with the city as an art gallery and then quickly filled the walls with works that he made sure looked so much like art, you couldn't tell the difference. But the funniest thing about the Fake Gallery was that the fake artworks started flying off the walls. Paul's works have appeared on several television shows including Sarah Silverman's Comedy Central special and were a primary background in Bobcat Goldthwait's documentary, "Call Me Lucky." Paul just finished a 60-painting commission for the Cartoon Network's new expanded headquarters in Burbank, CA. Kozlowski, a native of Cortland, makes his east coast debut with this exhibition. "Fake Upstate", which will feature fictitious works from the region's finest made-up artists such as Color Swatches from Roy Biv, former general manager of the Solvay Paint Company; landscapes from Florence Blerthington, a housewife from Preble who once punched Georgia O'Keeffe because she thought she was putting the moves on her; and artifacts like the charred remains from Careless Larry's Fireworks stand from Polkville, NY.
