Tonto Revisited: Native American Stereotypes Onondaga Historical Association
Price: $5 Ska-nonh Great Law of Peace Center
6680 Onondaga Lake Parkway,
Liverpool
For generations the portrayal of Native Americans has been one of menacing warriors wielding tomahawks, knives, and bows and arrows. This imagery was found in posters, advertisements, toys, sports logos and more. On their own, these items can seem harmless, however, when put together, the destructive nature of the imagery is apparent. Tom Huff's collection of stereotypical "Indian Kitch," brought together in one exhibit, will help to dispel the myths surrounding Native Americans and encourage a new understanding of Indigenous peoples.

A Legacy of Firsts: The Everson Collects Everson Museum of Art
Everson Museum of Art
401 Harrison St.,
Syracuse
In 1911, the Syracuse Museum of Fine Arts (known today as the Everson) made history as the first museum in the country to declare that it would focus on collecting works made by American artists. This decision, implemented by Museum Director Fernando Carter, was the first of many made by directors that ultimately defined the Everson's collection as it exists today. This exhibition examines over one hundred years of the Museum's collecting priorities, from the Museum's earliest acquisitions in 1911 to work acquired in 2019.

Jerome Witkin: This Time, This World ArtRage Gallery
Price: Free ArtRage Gallery
505 Hawley Ave.,
Syracuse
Jerome Witkin is one of the most important figurative painters alive today. After studying art in both the U.S. and Europe, he became a professor of art at Syracuse University in 1971. John Handley, Director of the Stephen Austin University Art Galleries, writes "Witkin's art is not for the faint of heart. Although he renders in pencil and paint as skillfully and theatrically as Caravaggio or Rembrandt—he is a master of drama and light—his work often carries the blunt force of a wartime journalist." His biographer, Sherry Chayat, once noted that when Witkin enters his studio, "... he leaps into the dark realm of political repression, the Holocaust, the private wars of domesticity, the collision of recurrent nightmares and the evening news." In this his first exhibition at ArtRage, he will offer us a stunning glimpse of his artwork dealing with a range of social issues that, as he put it, "insisted on being painted." His work is included in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Uffizi, the Cleveland Museum of Art, and the Hirshhorn Museum.

The scuttlebutt is that all the famous pirates of the day be gathering down by the docks at London's infamous Finch and Pickle Tavern. 'Tis true, me hardies, and they be cooking up the most dastardly deed of all time. Come the tide, they be sailing to the North Pole to kidnap old Saint Nick himself! Hold on to your parrot, bucco.

In 1911, the Syracuse Museum of Fine Arts (known today as the Everson) made history as the first museum in the country to declare that it would focus on collecting works made by American artists.

All About My Mother (2000) ArtRage Gallery
ArtRage Gallery
505 Hawley Ave.,
Syracuse
Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar is famed for exploring outcast relationships and the real meaning of family. This acclaimed film spins around the curiosities of unorthodox familial life framed by a series of sudden crises faced by Manuela and her circle. Manuela is a single mother who has raised her son Esteban by herself. At 17 Esteban wants only to discover the identity of his father, which has been carefully hidden by Manuela. Almovodar offers a dramatic yet comic, sometimes bawdy tapestry of sisterhood, searching hearts, and people crossing the gender divide. It is a poignant film brimming with sincerity and compassion which is no small triumph considering two of its main characters are transvestite hookers, another is a pregnant nun, and two more are battling lesbians. And all ironically express family values. Cast includes Cecilia Roth and Penelope Cruz. Oscar: Best Foreign Language Film; Cannes Festival: Best Film.

Dionne Lee: Trap and Lean-to Light Work Gallery
Light Work Gallery
316 Waverly Ave., Syracuse University,
Syracuse
Oakland, California-based artist Dionne Lee employs video, collage, photography, and sculpture to explore American landscape and her place within its complex history. As an African American woman, she sees the natural world as both a place of refuge and tranquility, but also the location of racial violence, danger, and vulnerability. More broadly, her work acknowledges the terror of climate change, mass migration, and humanity's ongoing drama of survival. Duality often surfaces in work where she notes that "two things can be true at once."

Raphael Trelles: The Imagined Word Point of Contact Gallery
Price: Free Point of Contact Gallery
350 W. Fayette St.,
Syracuse
Rafael Trelles, from Santurce, Puerto Rico, is a painter, printmaker, installation artist, stage and costume designer. Trelles completed his Bachelors' Degree at the University of Puerto Rico, and his Doctorate from Escuela Nacional de Artes Plásticas (Academia San Carlos). In the mid-1980s, Trelles resided in the Canary Islands, where he produces a series of paintings titled The Universal Tarot, resembling his later works use of mysticism and magic. Returning to Puerto Rico in 1986, he dedicated himself to his art and to the artist group El Alfil (Image and Word), which he co-founded in 1994. Trelles also does public art using a pressure hose on walls, sidewalks, and other surfaces, a genre he calls "urban graphic art" seen in the 2007 documentary En Concreto (On Concrete). The film illustrates this experimental graphic work originally designed for abandoned sectors of worldwide cities. In "The Imagined Word," Trelles employs references to Hispanic mythology and world literature. Influenced by surrealist Max Ernst, he brings the viewer on a voyage to an esoteric world of characters in dreamlike settings, where solitude reigns.
